Because he thought she could change her? Because she may have threatened suicide? There are a few explanations that would cover it.
I do know that it is not necessarily the guy who should be blamed for this.

I am not blaming him necessarily. I think he had to have issues though for him to allow her to stay there for 2 years. My god, he was feeding her, changing her clothes. Come on, that isn't normal. If she was threatening suicide than he could have gotten someone there without her knowing.
