Default Mexico to decriminalize pot, cocaine and heroin

Mexico to decriminalize pot, cocaine and heroin

Possessing marijuana, cocaine and even heroin will no longer be a crime in Mexico if the drugs are carried in small amounts for personal use, under legislation passed by Congress.

The measure given final passage by senators in a late night session on Thursday allows police to focus on their battle against major drug dealers, the government says, and President Vicente Fox is expected to sign it into law.

"This law provides more judicial tools for authorities to fight crime," presidential spokesman Ruben Aguilar said on Friday. The measure was approved earlier by the lower house.

Under the legislation, police will not penalize people for possessing up to 5 grams of marijuana, 5 grams of opium, 25 milligrams of heroin or 500 milligrams of cocaine.

People caught with larger quantities of drugs will be treated as narcotics dealers and face increased jail terms under the plan.

The legal changes will also decriminalize the possession of limited quantities of other drugs, including LSD, hallucinogenic mushrooms, amphetamines and peyote -- a psychotropic cactus found in Mexico's northern deserts.

The legislation came as a surprise to Washington, which counts on Mexico's support in its war against drug smuggling gangs who move massive quantities of cocaine, heroin, marijuana and methamphetamines through Mexico to U.S. consumers.

Oh yeah another lovely reason to allow illegal immigrants to just walk across the border unchecked. We ABSOLUTELY have to close the borders now!!! They have abused our good nature for far too long, leave the borders open and we'll lose another generation to the worlds worst drugs.

How are they qualifyig legal dealers? The people have to get their drugs from somewhere. I say lets get American to infiltrate Mexico and start selling drugs legally there -- then we can bring that money back to the US and keep the dope-heads in Mexico. Lots of opportunities for enterprizing young druggies!

We can set up legal drug stands all along the border - let the dopes buy them legally in Mexico and when they cross the border to the US we can arrest them immediately because its not legal here!

Since the US outsources so much, I think we should outsource prisons for illegal alians to Siberia. We pay the Siberians to keep them in prison so that will create jobs for them, and keep the US infiltration down. Those who cross from Mexico (not all are Mexicans) will be shipped there immediately and they'll be so stoned they will never know. Then we confiscate the drugs they bring with them and turn around and re-sell them to others!

This whole thing is just fubar!

It is not that insane.

Mushrooms are semi-legal here anyway. And we won't mention marihuana.

Heroin is an endorphin, and highly similar to some classes of neurotransmitters in the brain. Not that harmful for one's health, compared to legally accepted drugs (smoking to name one). The problem is, if it is mixed with other substances things get worse quite a bit.

Don't know much about peyote, but I can't imagine usage having more adverse affect on a person than systematic bingedrinking which is common among youth anyway.

And don't get me started about the amphetamines. If an US athlete uses it, it not considered doping, but it is considered a drug by the US authorities? Makes perfect nonsense. Any change of course in the sports and athletics field?

Don't forget the medical uses for opium.

Think of the quantities involved.
40 people are needed to legally share 1 whole gram of heroin under that law. That is 40,000 people for a single kg. And as organized crime does not ship in 25 milligram, it makes more sense to decriminalize small quantities, and focus attention on the big players in the field.

If we would do an inspection of what is going on in Colombia for instance, part of the blame goes to exactly the War on Drugs. By practically forcing farmers to grow coca (as a result of the strategies involved) it should not come as a surprise that part of that coca might show up in the US in the future.

Besides under US law (we have experience with that) you can be prosecuted and sentenced to jail for a drug-crime
a) while you have never been on US soil
b) without a fair trial
c) you did not commit
I can't see why this would apply to the Netherlands and not to Mexico.

They really aren't even close to being countries who ressemble. Mexico needs to spend a great deal of time getting these people out of utter poverty...not letting them get legally high.

Point was, that the law applies to the Netherlands, and most of Europe. Can't see why the US would have made an exception for Mexico.
