Nose, Lips, Chin: Woman disfigured in dog attack

This article appeared in the 'Province' Newspaper:

LYON, France -- Doctors have performed the world's first partial face transplant, grafting a nose, lips, and chin on to a 38-year-old woman disfigured by a dog bite.

The woman was in "excellent" condition and the transplants look "normal", the statement said. The woman wanted to remain anonymous.

One of the surgeons, Dr. Dubernard, said this operation was the world's first of its kind. There have been scalp and ear transplants, but this is the first for the nose and mouth, the most difficult parts of the face to transplant.
The organs were taken from a donor who was brain dead, the hospital said.
Anyone recall the movie Face/Off in which two characters' faces are surgically swapped? Several groups of scientists around the world are working to perfect the technique in transplanting faces. A complete face transplant involves applying a sheet of skin in one operation, has never been done before.

I do too. she's very lucky to have had this done. this is an awesome advancement!

I just hope they don't use it in the future for changing one's identity. I hope they always just do this for disfigured people. it's great for them!!

the dog was trying to revive her after she tried to kill herself...the donor also tried to kill herself, but lived long enough to be a donor.

I don't think it would be a bad thing. There are some severely ugly people in this world. Also, think of witness protection. They already do plastic surgery, why not step it up a bit?

me and my friends in high school had a theory that ugly people were a seperate species(ogre) and that one of my friends was part of the race, we never told him that.
