'Everybody's Baby'
An article from the 'Province' Newspaper states:
'She was the city's "ultimate homeless person", an abandoned baby left at a bus stop a year ago. Now baby Jane Doe is homeless and nameless no more.
"She was noboby's baby before we took her under our wings, then she was everybody's baby," said Vancouver lawyer Kathleen Walker, who spearheaded efforts to raise money for the baby.
A passerby at first said she rescued the infant from a bag. Later, the woman, a new immigrant, said a woman got out of a car and pushed the baby into her arms saying, "Take care of my baby."
The baby was taken into the care of the Ministry of Children and Family Development. She was treated at BC Children's Hospital because she had trouble breathing.
Police have "exhausted all the avenues" searching for the Mother who is described as an Asian or Latina in her early 30's, about five feet four inches, medium build.
A trust fund has reached several thousand dollars--from private donations and Walker's donation of consultation fees--for her to access at 19. Sprott-Shaw Community College offered the girl a full scholarship of up to $32,000. And dozens of other sent clothes, blankets and toys.
Heartfelt letters from the public are kept for her in her Ministry file. Walker states: "I wanted her to have something waiting for her that says, despite the tragic circumstances of her birth, she's needed, she's loved, she's part of the community."
