Default Amish gather at funerals to pray for slain girls

http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNew...ub=CTVNewsAt11

In a statement Wednesday, the community pleaded for privacy as it copes with the tragedy by looking inward. The Amish are relying on one another and their faith, as they have for centuries, as they cope with what one Amish bishop called "our 9/11."

"They know their children are going to heaven. They know their children are innocent ... and they know that they will join them in death," said Gertrude Huntington, a Michigan researcher who has written a book about children in Amish society.

"The hurt is very great, but they don't balance the hurt with hate." quote

What a horrible thing to happen to these people who live their lives in privacy, peace, and forgiveness

That was such a tragedy. What is wrong with people today? I can't believe all the shootings I have heard of over the last 2 or 3 weeks. It is depressing that people are dealing with there problems in such a drastic way.

I just don't understand why people don't get help with their problems! Why is it so difficult to admit we all have problems and accept help instead of getting to the point for such desperate measures? What totally gets me is 'why do they take young children with them' when they commit suicide?

The ideology of personal responsibility. The fact that professional psychiatric health care is not available to all. The pressure of having to pretend that the marriage is alright, when husband and wife literally consider shooting each other.

There is reason in insanity.

Young children are of course symbols for innocence; times when worries were not too big. That there was (hopefully) always someone to turn to.

I would think that if a person KNEW they were insane they would ask for help....but much like a drug addict or alcoholic....there is a vast amount of denial due to living in their own world. I doubt they know how nuts they really are because their version of reality is vastly different than ours.

They hear and obey voices, they are paranoid, they are confused. Reality as we know it isn't within them. So, how can they be coherent enough to ask for help?

I think of kids who are horribly abused and there is really no wonder theygrow up all farked up. It's not an excuse....but if we could start there....helping them...maybe we could curb some of these bizaare behaviors of their adulthood.
