TORONTO--A woman accused of slowly starving her five-year-old grandson to death was attacked while on her way to Court.
Elva Bottineau's sensational murder trial was put on hold after the 54-year-old was assaulted in a police van, apparently by another prisoner.
Why she was attacked and the extent of her injuries was not released.
Bottineau and Norman Kidman have pleaded not guilty to the first-degree murder in the death of Jeffrey Baldwin on Nov. 30, 2002.
Court has heard tha Jeffrey lived in an unheated, filthy locked bedroom and died of septic shock after contracting bacterial pneumonia.
When paramedics discovered his frail body, he weighed less than he did on his first birthday.
Bottineau and Kidman were given custody of Jeffrey and his three siblings
after the children were taken from their parents over suspected child abuse.
