Default 4 Year Old Dies ar Disney World

4-year-old Dies After Riding Disney Attraction

The Associated Press
Updated: 9:37 a.m. ET June 14, 2005

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - A 4-year-old boy died after passing out while aboard Walt Disney World's "Mission: Space" attraction — a ride that has caused previous concerns because of its intensity.

Daudi Bamuwamye passed out Monday afternoon while on the attraction, which simulates a rocket launch and trip to Mars. The Orange County Sheriff's Office said his mother carried him off the ride and employees helped her place him on a bench.

Paramedics tried to revive him, but he died about 5 p.m. at Celebration Hospital.

The sheriff's office said the boy did meet the minimum 44-inch height requirement for the ride at the Epcot theme park, which simulates twice the normal force of gravity.

A cause of death could not be immediately determined and an autopsy was expected Tuesday.

Officials said the boy was from Pennsylvania, but his hometown was not immediately available. He was on the ride with his mother and sister.

The $100 million ride, one of Disney World's most popular, was closed after the death.

In 2003, Disney began placing motion sickness bags in the ride. During an eight-month period in 2003-04, six people over age 55 were taken to the hospital for chest pain and nausea after riding it, though none of them was found to have any serious injuries.

It was the most hospital visits for a single ride since Florida's major theme parks agreed in 2001 to report such problems to the state. Updated figures were not immediately available.

Signs warn visitors about the intensity of the ride.

"For safety you should be in good health, and free from high blood pressure, heart, back or neck problems, motion sickness or other conditions that can be aggravated by this adventure," one sign on view last year said.

Disney officials in a statement after the boy's death that they are "providing support to the family and are doing everything we can to help them during this difficult time."

I've been to Disney and the surrounding theme parks on numreous occasions. It's totally absurd how some parents use no common sense on which rides just aren't age appropriate for younger kids. It's not like most of the park isn't geared towards little ones...with only a few adult rides thrown inbetween.

That's really too bad.
I've been on that a couple times and it was a really fun ride.
It was so mild I can hardly imagine someone dying from it.

:? I went on that ride in January and I was pregnant, I told the attendant and I was still able to ride it, it is a very mild ride, I wouldn't have hesitated to take my children on it.

Still I feel very sad for the poor faimly

poor family.

They might find out that there was something medically wrong with the boy after they do an autopsy. If you guys say it was a really mild ride then this shouldn't of happened. What a sad story. I feel really bad for the family.

Chloe said it was a very physically felt ride....but she can't imagine it killing someone.....even a younger child. Maybe he had heart problems they weren't aware of.

The bad part is...people can sue ANY ride in any theme park regardless of how careful the park tries to be. Thus...the high cost of the entrance fee.

DANG! It was only $47 just a couple of years ago. Jackson and his lawn mowing buddy are saving money for me to take them to Universal Studio's. I better recheck the price!!!

Probably there was something wrong with the health of the kid, but it simply went unnoticed. We'll have to wait for the autopsy results to know if that was the case.

The thing is, this will lead to Disney requiring a proof that the people who go on these rides, have their health checked, so to make certain that they can't be held legally responsible for accidents like this. Or even worse, that people who enter the parks forfeit the right to hold Disney responsibile for any negative influences on their health.
