I noticed that the site itself runs slow...i think it may be because of all the animated smilies on every forum....but it might not be can you please check this out Dook?

The forum speed was running fine prior to that day where the database server was down. Apparently it was being spammed by some user and it's been fixed now.

I already complained about the site speed and Canaca assured me it was allright but I see it isn't. It shouldn't have anything to do with the animated gifs but I can look into that too. The gifs are small files and really shouldn't hurt site performance since I have 80 GB of available bandwidth per month.

Currently, we use about 1.7% of that limit.

actually, she may have something with her smiley angle. I just clicked on KingSmiley and he's 63018 bytes. Thats a huge file for a smiley.

The bummer is now that I have to go through them again, check the sizes, remove the large file size images, edit them, rez them down, re-save, re-upload, re-install.

Can I say the f word?

To Canaca:

The speed is still pretty inconsistant. It's not a problem common to any page in general and I've had a few members complain about it. Just curious if you've noticed anything at your end. Again, site speed was a non issue prior to the db server going down.

Is it the same if we put it on here from another site as it is if you house them on here? I hope that made sense since I don't know spit about puters.

It's a good question that I can't answer unfortunately.

In theory, any file I host on this site should be faster than an "offsite" file. This is the main reason you cannot link to an offsite avatar as that sites bandwidth may slow your images loading on my site. I haven't noticed any of your smileys taking a long time to load Merika so I'd have to say it's a non issue at this time.

I know some of the image files are large but don't think they should be an issue really. I will edit the larger gifs but the smaller ones should be fine.

I also just logged into my vitual hosting account with Canaca and have only used 2% of my monthly alotted bandwidth and only 1% of my available disk space. I wish Alexa would rate my forum speed soon so I can gauge it with other sites and see if it's really a big issue.

Merika, how long does it take to load a page on this site on dial up (on average)? Can you connect, try and few pages and give me an estimate?

Around 1330 EST I tried to access the site using my back-up dial up. It took just over a minute for the page to load. Going from one topic to the next was just a few seconds. That's pretty normal time for a dial up. It's the SENDING which took forever. So long, in fact, than I an retyping this message using my cable connection instead.

On cable.....also it's the SENDING a message which I find to be so slow.

Maybe you could poll the group to see if this is where everyone else's slower times are.

BTW: I was not sending with a smiley on the post and have noticed no difference if I do or don't use a smiley.

I don't think the smileys are the issue. Granted, the larger ones may cause a bit of a slowdown but not what we're experiencing now.

Sent to Canaca.com today, urgency high:

Site speed has been poor since the database server went offline last week. Once fixed, the speed of the site has been inconsistant on every page either posting, replying or viewing topics. Can you please look into it?

Just to give you some perspective on the matter, the speed is as bad as it was prior to you guys fixing it in late September. All of my members connect through Cable and DSL and many have expressed concerns.

Thanks for looking into this,

ken
