I can never figure out, why bother joining? It's a waste of time, could be ironing like I should be doing right this moment....

Here you have to register in order to keep viewing our forums. People who are not logged in/unregistered here can only view 8 or 10 threads (I forget which) prior to losing forum browsing access. I added this feature in an attempt to more closely understand our traffic patterns and see how much of our traffic actually returned and wanted to continue browsing our content. To this day I still see returning members simply browsing the forums who have posted once, twice or not at all.
The other thing that doesn't help is a lot of people just aren't comfortable posting online. There could be a plethora of reasons for this such as a hostile forum environment, a bad experience at a similar forum or simply feel out of place with entrenched membership.
As friendly as this place can appear to be, it may be daunting for many new members because they can feel as outcasts when compared to daily posters. This exact issue was brought up to me by one of our members a long time ago because he/she felt that they didn't fit in due to their topic not being replied to in a satisfactory manner. This is difficult to deal with because everyone has their own idea of what a satisfactory response to their thread is. It may be as simple as only 4 responses to a welcome thread when someone else received 4 pages of response.
I've personally seen members leave for a variety of reasons some of which include off topic discussion, bickering, who's on staff, another member, etc., and it's a rare occasion that anything can be done about it.
As an example, we had a member here a long time ago who just had a hate on for me and tried to undermine me and the site at virtually every opportunity. His big mistake was picking on a new member and that was what actually lead to his demise at Lifesupporters.com. Along the way, I begged this idiot to calm down via PM, e-mail, forum policing, etc., and he just wouldn't/couldn't. Sadly, this one tard and his/her actions, were directly responsible for the loss of close to 6 members (that I know of).
There was another member who loved it here until he learned that one of the people he'd hated most online was an active staff member here. No amount of trying to mediate made this issue dissolve and we ultimately lost a few great members over this issue (the staff member is no longer involved at Lifesupporters.com).
I used staff as examples as they are usually at the front lines of controversy when it comes to site antics.
I had another member recently register and PM me how much she thought this place was gold. She had only membered here a few days when she ran into a post she didn't like and that was it.
This is part of the online experience so we're as stuck with it as every other active community online. The only thing we can do is try to embrace new members and make them feel at home.
At the end of the day though, I'd never expect more than 1 or 2 regularly active members for ever 50 registrations. Even this low statistic will have see us ahead of the curve with a 2% active member ratio. Right now, we're quite close to an 18% - 20% reasonably active memberslist so we're way ahead of any site I've ever seen online.
Hope this helps.
