I would given her a flame-thrower and the right to grill the manager for 20 seconds.

Incompetence should be a criminal offense.

She was a hero to the audience as well as many other people, I'm sure! It was SO funny when she said that 'what could they do to a 75 year old woman anyway?' Her husband thought she was just going over there to threaten, not smash things!

Re: 75 Year Old Woman Takes Hammer to...

In SA there was this guy who was so fed up waiting for his ID (without which he cannot work, qualify for grants, subsidies, housing etc.) that he went to Home Affairs, and held someone hostage with a water gun.

And he still does not have his ID, despite numerous promises by HA to look after the matter.

It was said on the "Dr. Phil" show that there are all kinds of agencies to help people, but didn't say how to get hold of them and have the problem fixed in appropriate time!

Re: 75 Year Old Woman Takes Hammer to...

The problem is, that it takes your time to rectify the messes created by the likes of Comcast in this situation. You should be able to charge them $50 an hour for just that.

Re: 75 Year Old Woman Takes Hammer to...

Actually, the guy that said there were agencies around that if she used one, she probably could have gotten Comcast to pay her instead of having to pay the $2500 damages she made.

Anyway, she is a hero to a lot of people! For her 76th birthday, her husband gave her a gold hammer pin that she wore on the show!

Ya, same with that guy in SA. He got sentenced to 5 years in jail. And the real culprits are of scot free.

Thanks for the story, Vautrin! Yes, it takes matters like these to get noticed and things happen, usually ending in a very bad way..

The problem is, Home Affairs is so corrupt and incompentent it is actually worse dealing with them than serving some time. In fact if given the option I think even people on death row may prefer death over having to deal with South African Home Affairs 24/7.

Re: 75 Year Old Woman Takes Hammer to...

I had to apply for my visa extension. Bear in mind English is an official language in SA

Of the 10 requirements listed, only 2 were accurate. Even the online service of HA referred to the WRONG document.

I was supposed to apply "30 days in advance" - which surprisingly meant a maximum of 30 days. And stuff like that.

Re: 75 Year Old Woman Takes Hammer to...

you can actually hire people to do that stuff for you - at insane prices. But with the insanity at Home Affairs, it might be worth it.

Really? How does one do that?...I should add that I wouldn't consider it, however...I haven't had anything like that happen to me....

They advertise. It is funny. There is not a streetpole that does not carry advertisements on abortions in Johannesburg (SA) - even up to 9 months - and yet police never even bother to check it out.

Re: 75 Year Old Woman Takes Hammer to...

Take bribes. Shoot each other. Cover up for each other. Be head of interpol and possibly take bribes (Jackie Selebi), which is now being dealt with in the Justice system.

Most cops actually do work, but are so underpaid, and underresourced it is not funny anymore.

So, so sad, Vautrin! How do people have faith in them and call for help when needed?

They don't. People's / Mob justice is getting more and more popular. Private security industry is the second biggest industry in the country.

I'm not surprised then! Why bother having police?

Re: 75 Year Old Woman Takes Hammer to...

To waste money on?

I don't know how much of the South African news you get, but:

SA has two branches of Police. One is the regular police service and the other is dealing with organised crime. That second unit (Scorpions) has been quite succesful in getting people behind bars, and investigating very complicated cases. They are the ones who investigated the police chief and the current ANC leader, Jacob Zuma (on charges of corruption etc.). Zuma's financial assistant has been jailed for all kinds of corruption in a case which implicated Zuma directly and explicitly.

Now the ANC, who have about 70% of seats in parliament, come up with the brave idea to disband the Scorpions. These two cases are very important, as they will give a clear direction of what direction the country will be taking for at least the next ten years.

I think it's great to learn from a person that's been somewhere and has seen first-hand how things are run...it's much more interesting than just seeing it on the News...

Re: 75 Year Old Woman Takes Hammer to...

The problem is that because of apartheid there is a huge shortage of skills (as a historical effect of that system). But the people who were disadvantaged then are of course needed in the police etc. So it is hard to find qualified people. And as poverty still is rampant (police don't get paid that well at all), corruption and such are very attractive options for them.

Re: 75 Year Old Woman Takes Hammer to...

Corruption....such a horrible word! I wonder how a person, faced with doing something illegal, that moment when you do or don't, how does one live with the wrong decision from then on?
