You guys must have more than a 60GB/month bandwidth cap like I do

i have no cap on my internet, but i dont use that much bandwidth. Mine is probably not going to be a web server, i am debating between running ESX and server 08 for stacking some virtual machines on there and then running a virtual network couple of domain controllers maybe an exchange server and sql. its a quad core xeon box with 8GB ram so as long as my hard drives dont bottleneck too much i should be able to run a a decent number of VMs, pretty much i wanted it to practice stuff on.

give some take some =)

personally if i were to set up a raid i would go with raid5 - less disks to buy and overall more storage for my money

but for absolute performance without loss of redundancy raid10 does the trick quite well

yeah, but im not running a live environment so i dont need that much space, ill eventually move to 15k drives or SSD and if the server needs storage ill probably buy or build a small iscsi san unit, 10gb ethernet should give good disk performance

I think that I would run linux as the host for virtual machines. I use Archlinux with a permanent XP guest right now, plus I install other guests whenever I feel like tinkering.

i will probably use vmware ESX cause its a hypervisor, so its hardware level virtualization support, but i have to get a product key from work cause its not cheap, which is why i will probably use server 08 with hyper-v first cause i get that through msdn, and its also a hypervisor but server 08 is a much heftier host

I'd still run it on a linux host ... esx works with linux as well

i wont argue about server 08 being heftier because that has not been proved to me in any manner
