Football
I watched the St. Louis/Seattle game today and am a big St. Louis fan so I was utterly disappointed when seconds left in the game they were beaten by a field goal!

If I did not have internet, I may find out the information on the score on the day of Super Bowl. Provided of course that one of the contending teams makes it to the Super Bowl.
Yet I have to explain American Football to my girlfriend .

Yes, and that is the only game that is televised here.
Also, there is a European League, but that is during the off-season of the NFL. A lot of young players, who don't get regular play-time in the US, get there experience there. But you get the summaries a couple of days later, when there is no other sport to fill a sports program with :?

Most popular (no contest) in the Netherlands, and most of Europe is football (soccer as the Americans call it). I watch occassionally, but nothing more.
Then you have sports like ice-skating. Very popular, although the weather is not really conducive to lots of practice these years.
Tennis, swimming, hippic sports are quite popular too. Sailing (although more recreational than as sports) also scores well. Hockey (field hockey, not ice hockey) scores good. Volleyball.
All those sports in no way generate as much money, or attendance figuers as football.
And there is this game called "korfbal" which is played between two teams, which consist of both male and female members.

It is a bit similar to basketball. It is played with teams of 8, 4 women and 4 men. Men may only defend men, women may only defend women. The object of the game is to score in a basket, which is 3.5 meters in the air.
Playing field is a bit different from basketball too, and more comparable to ice hockey. The field continues for a bit behind the basket, and there are also "areas" in the game (which in Ice Hockey serve to decide on offsides, and icings).
Don't know more of the game, but that covers the basics.

It quite an interesting game. You can play it both indoors and outdoors too (if weather permits), so it definitely has some potential.
I have no clue how to translate "korfbal", as in translation it is "basketball."

Re:
I've become interested in Nascar Busch Series, and Nascar Nextel Series racing. I love watching Rally Racing and live tennis coverage as well. Other than that, I really don't watch much in the way of sports programming.
