Default God Parents

What exactly is a God parent for?

My sister is having a baby, she isn't religious but she asked me to be the God mother. I think that means that the kid is going to be baptized... but when i was a kid i was taught that your God parent is the one who takes care of you if/when your biological parents die...

anyways, what is a god parent to you?

yeah it has to do when the kid is baptized and it is who takes over raising the kid if the parents die usually.

That's not what I was taught or thought it was but it does sound plausible to me.

I got the short end of the stick. I got the broke unknown relatives and my sister got the rich fun relatives.

god-parnts are 2 people that a parent choose for their child to act as their religious example though life. the god parents will be there when the baby (or child) is baptized, first communion and first confirmation.

it also used to mean that if the parents were to die that the god-parents would be the ones to raise the child.

my kids were baptized so they have god-parents. their god-parents have gone through every religious rituals with them. that's aobut the only role a god-parent has.

my god-parents were my grand-parents. they passed on in my adult years. they never got involved with my religious rituals. we lived too far away so that kind of defeated the purpose of having god-parents. we lived in different provinces.

although erika isn't baptized yet (and i don't think we're going to get her baptized. we're going to leave this one up to krystal), her god-parents are kassandra and my baby brother (who is 22).

Star hit it right on the head.

God-parents are used in religions that practice infant baptism, such as catholicism. As far as I know.
