Default Beliving the bible stories

This is a spin off of another thread, but it got me thinking about the bible stories in the old testement.

Take Noah's ark for example I love that story it's wonderful but honestly do I really think some old guy put two of every animal on a boat and survived for 30 days without the animals killing eachother

Nor can I believe that Johna got swallowed by a whale ( reminds me to much of Pannocio I guess)

I hate to question the bible. I believe most of the new testement but some stories I have a very hard time relating to anything but a fairy tale... I am glad these stories are in the bible because it deffinatly expands the imagination and puts the fear of god in children but as an adult I can no longer relate.

Do you believe ALL the Bible stories?

I'm not really familiar with all the biblical tales. I'd have to agree with the Noah's Arc assessment though.

I have a hard time believe the bible in whole because it's been translated and re-written so many times. How do we know for sure that every word in there is true? Not to mention the different bibles for every religion. They all claim that they have the "true" bible.

The stories are good and cute for kids but I have to agree, as an adult, they are a tad bit out there to be reality. The Noah's Ark story for sure! seems impossible to do since all animals don't live in one place.

I always go with something in the Bible which says what God speaks is truth and all man is a liar. Therefore, if He says he put apples on a banana tree.....I believe! If He says he put animals on a great big boat...I believe.

Maybe it's a mistranslation, maybe it's a metaphor, maybe it's way off.....I don't know and I don't care.

I don't have the luxury of picking thru the Bible as to what makes sense to me and what doesn't. If it's in there....it's there for a reason....and I'm going to believe it.....even if I don't understand it. This is the God who I believe created the universe....therefore, I believe he can do the impossible.

I'm THAT simple in my beliefs.....

Speaking of understanding something which doesn't make sense.... I was watching TV once about some tribe in South America who don't have a perception of time because they don't have clocks or days of the week. They just exist in their own day to day time frame. To me....the ways of God are much the same. Just because I don't have a perception or understanding of what He says and does.....does not make it less true. It just means....I don't understand yet.

Default I believe

I read the bible and believe it. Many stories in the bible have been proven true, for example, they found a bunch of chariots at the bottom of the red sea, where you would not expect to see chariots.

The most part of being a christian and believing the bible is true is just faith, there's that step of faith you have to have to believe in him, faith is what saves you.

Here's an interesting link about the Ark and people who have seen it or portions thereof. I don't know if it's really THE Ark....but I thought I would share.

It's just me....I would assume there is some sort of reasonable/understandable explanation for things God does...much like when John in Revelations saw things shaped like giant scorpions flying in the sky shooting fire ....which is easily understood by our generation due to how war planes are shaped.

I don't see God as some wierdo in the sky who does preposterous things. I'm sure there is an explanation and understanding somewhere down the line.

BTW: That was a GREAT post idea Stoneheather.

Default Stone? Is it really you?????

What's up girl? Hope things are well with you.

Anyway, on topic:

I believe that the bible is occasionally historically accurate. However, it's purpose is to teach rather then be used for an accurate account of things. Therefore, I take what I read with a grain of salt.

Some things, like the miracles and such, I am not sure that I believe. Don't get me wrong, that part of me that's still a kid would love proof of miracles.

I know that there is a mountain Ararat somewhere, and I do believe that there was a great flood because of the scientific evidance. Well, there was this special on this History Channel...

About virgin birth...I don't know about all o fthat. I'm still up in the air. I'd like to believe in miracles, and I'd LIKE to believe that a virgin girl could conceive, but I am too logical to accept on faith what my mind knows is impossible with out seeing it first.

I know I'm a doubting Thomas, but that's just how my brain works.

Maybe God is really a group of aliens. One of my fav bands, Sparta, has this song about a conspiracy to where aliens dropped us off on earth to mine gold for them. They were so much more advanced then we were that we interpreted them as demi-gods, rather then just technologically advanced. In case any of you are in to Sparta, the song is called, "Echodyne Harmonics."

I'm not trying to be blastphemous, just throwing out ideas.

I don't think it's important whether or not the stories are true--because let's face it, a lot of them are not.

The point is more the message they convey--As in, something need not be true in order to be meaningful.

Chariots? Come on.

I have trouble believeing these stories can be taken literally, but I do have a strong belief in the teaching they portray and the message they deliver. It's teh same thing as me believing in evolution and creationism at the same time, with the bible being a metaphor for the other. I do not believe it is possible for the world to have developed without a supreme deity, God in my case, having a hand in it.

how else would there be chariot wheels in the bottum of the sea?
Not only just the middle of a sea with no sign of metal from a ship, but also at the narrowest part which would have been the easiest for crossing.

The ship that carried the chariot wheels will have rotted away a zillion years ago, assuming it was a ship.

No ship and no zillion years. It was chariot wheels exactly the type, era and place of which the Bible described. There was no reason for them to be there except exactly for the reason the story said they were there.

Did you know that based on that very story....they later figured out they were short one Eqgyptian Dynesty which answered this historical question they had regarding the matter?

I think we will all find out in the end....that God knows all. Again....just my opinion.
