Default I'm a bad influence

I just got off the phone with my daugter, man she's a riot.

Anyway, we were talking about her math homework (she's in grade 4) and I was asking what she was doing specifically in math. She replied, "I don't know, counting stuff". We both had a laugh over that one and started on the topic of hoping she doesn't have a test coming up.

Anyway, that lead us to a spelling test she has later this week. I think she's prepared for it so I asked her to spell everything right but to acutally misspell her name. We're both curious to see if the teacher even notices and if so, what the reaction is.

The funny thing about her class is the teachers don't give out D's or F's any more if you fail. The lowest mark you can receive in her class (according to my daughter) is a C-. That can't be right can it?

It could be why my kids are pushing for us to move to Canada! HAHA!

Seriously, some schools are trying that in the USA as well. The mind set is that if you don't give a failing grade.....kids won't fail. Some schools have also quit grading with red markers/pens due to it giving a negative feeling.

Personally, I think it's a bunch of CRAP!

My daughter (oldest one) have got D's and F's before in school. as a matter of fact, my youngest got a D last year in one of her subjects. I live in southern ontario and they still deliver the D's and F's here. that's weird how your daughter's teacher won't grade them as their work deserves. That can't be a good thing. 8O

My oldest daughter slipped through the cracks at school. They passed her every year (she should've failed most grades starting with the first grade) and she struggled more with each year. Probably the reason why she hates school now and wants nothing to do with it.

I don't think that is a good thing, I think we need to teach children to try their hardest BUT not be afraid to fail, I think if looked at properly Failure can be a HUGE learning experience.

However in my county if you are in High School, and you miss more than 10 days a quarter you don't get any credits. I think that's a bunch of crap. If you are an A student and you can still maintain an A while missing 10 days you should get credit for it.

My daughters doing pretty well in school and is a much better student than I was. She also enjoys going to school which I never did. Maybe they do give failing grades but she hasn't seen one to date.

Maybe I'm just lucky which may help explain much of my ignorance.
