I know it is total discrimination but when I used to hire employees I would usually pay someone with children $1-$1.50 more than single people. Greg my b/f used to argue about this all the time because I did it. He didn't agree what so ever....
He made a good point about it, you get paid what YOU are worth, not on your faimly unit..... I agree with his piont but I still paid higher anyways.... I also gave MUCH bigger christmas bonus to our guys with faimlies...

I think some people would certainly consider that discrimination. I see your reasoning and would be tempted to do the same thing....but it could make single workers without families pretty pissed off!

If someone could prove that you paid families more based off of preference rather than qualifications you could be sued. If I'm not mistaken, it can be viewed as a form of discrimination but don't quote me on it. I can find out though.

Well thank god that's verry hard to prove, the people we hire are usuallly mexican men ( in florida most masons are mexican) some of these men have anywhere between 3-10 children.
It is very hard for me to give a christmas bonus to a employee that couldn't cover gifts for all of their children....
Well on the other hand I guess we could have just bought gifts for their kids, offered to pay daycare expenses ect....
But the military does the same thing Is it fair for a man in the service to receive less if he is unmarried and has no children??? They pay is much less
OK I've opened my mouth and inserted my foot !! LOL

Actually, it's very easy to prove. All that needs to happen is that someone has to complain and you can have your records scrutinized over. If you cannot back up why some employees are being paid more than others then you will likely lose.
Your hearts in the right place but it's very risky indeed.

I know I know Greg yells at me all the time about it, I guess I should put the wages in his hands if he gets his business back ( blew away in the hurricane)
Maby I am "nicer" to people with children because I know 1st hand how hard it is to raise one on little money.

Sorry, I hope I wasn't coming across as an asshat. I'd hate to see you staring down the barrel of a lawsuit you couldn't win because you care too much.

The military doesn't get more pay or bonus based on how many kids they have. The DO get other amenities though, much like we get on our tax structure or for food stamps or whatever, based on the number of children they have.
I don't know exactly how the law is written. If I wanted to give one person more than another person in the way of a Christmas bonus....I would simply state it's a GIFT , not a reflection of work performed, therefore your choice of how much you want to give.

Duke got to my statement long before i even got a chance
how would you explain the $1-$1.50 /hr more Merika?
I myself would feel ashamed for being paid more for having kids (unless it were a nation wide thing) and not on my work ethic. I pride myself on that though, some people could care less just as long as the bone is getting thrown to them.

You can't unless it's performance based and there's adequate paperwork to reflect that.

I was just commenting on the Christmas bonus schedule. I didn't even see the hourly wage difference. NO WAY should someone with kids or married make more than a single person or a person without kids. If they need more money....they need to focus on a promotion or bonus for a job done well....not because they are in another tax bracket.
