Threat from bin Laden on eve of US election
By David Rennie in Washington
(Filed: 30/10/2004)

Osama bin Laden last night thrust himself into the heart of the US presidential election, directly urging the American people to take their nation's security into their own hands and turn aside from policies hostile to the Muslim world.

The stunning intervention by the al-Qa'eda leader, who looked gaunt but relatively fit and wore Arab dress, is certain to dominate the closing four days of the election.

President Bush: 'Americans will not be intimidated'

It has the potential to be a disastrous blow for the Democratic challenger, Senator John Kerry, by ensuring that the election will now be dominated by memories of September 11 and threats of terrorist attacks to come - both issues on which Mr Bush enjoys strong political advantages over Mr Kerry.

In what will doubtless be seen as terrorist blackmail, bin Laden directly admitted that he ordered the September 11 attacks and said "the best way to avoid another Manhattan" was to stop threatening the security of Muslims.

"Your security is not in the hands of Kerry or Bush or al-Qa'eda. Your security is in your own hands," he said, holding up Sweden as an example of a non-threatening country that had not been attacked by al-Qa'eda.

Bin Laden offered a historical explanation of the September 11 attacks and threatened more attacks if US policies did not change.

He did not endorse Mr Kerry for election but did effectively campaigned against Mr Bush, saying: "Despite entering the fourth year after September 11, Bush is still deceiving you and hiding the truth from you and therefore the reasons are still there to repeat what happened." He mocked Mr Bush for his conduct immediately after the September 11 attacks, talking about him preferring to stay in a classroom, "listening to a child discussing her goats", leaving "50,000 citizens in the two towers to face those horrors alone".

Bin Laden's attack was reminiscent of Michael Moore's film Fahrenheit 9/11 which used footage of Mr Bush in the first minutes after being told of the attacks continuing to read My Pet Goat to children.

Mr Kerry has criticised the Iraq war as a distraction from the true threat of bin Laden, accusing Mr Bush of letting him escape after the fall of the Taliban. Democrats will doubtless try to use the tape as evidence that bin Laden is a dangerous threat that Mr Bush has ignored.

The videotape appeared to be the election's long-awaited "October Surprise" - the unexpected bombshell news stories that often appear in the last days of an election campaign.

Memories of the September 11 attacks have formed the centrepiece of Mr Bush's bid for re-election, with Republicans this week sending a mailshot to battleground states bearing a photograph of the burning World Trade Centre towers.

Though Mr Bush and Mr Kerry are neck and neck overall in polls, Mr Bush enjoys a huge advantage over his rival when voters are asked whom they trust more to fight terrorism and keep America safe.

Mr Kerry's strongest suits are economic issues, though he has tried to dent Mr Bush's national security credentials by accusing him of mishandling the Iraq war. Mr Kerry has built on the deep split among American voters over the wisdom of the war.

But even a hint that bin Laden would like Mr Bush to lose the election can only play strongly in his favour. American politicians and voters alike were disgusted when the Spanish electorate ejected the government of Felipe Gonzalez in the wake of the Madrid train bombings, regarding their vote as a cowardly surrender to terrorist blackmail.

The videotape was the first filmed footage to surface of bin Laden since September 10 2003, when al-Qa'eda released a batch of two audiotapes, a series of videotaped threats and filmed statements by suicide bombers.

Bin Laden, whose health has been the subject of intense debate, has released audiotapes more recently.

In May, an audiotape was posted on two Islamic militant websites purporting to be from bin Laden, offering gold to anyone who killed Paul Bremer, then head of the US-led occupation in Iraq, the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, and the UN special envoy to Iraq, Lakhdar Brahimi.

I gotta tell you, the US war on terrorism is almost as painful to listen to as the OJ trials. I mean enough already, kill the bastard or shut the hell up.

Sorry guys and gals, I'm a Canadian and not really a political person. Listening to this media hype continue day after day is extremely tiring. What I don't understand is that the US set out to kill Bin Laden (didn't they?). The most technologically advanced nation in the entire world when it comes to defense (and offense) and the twit's still twitching? Enough already, dam.

Wanna impress me, heres how to do it. Arm the UN to the tits with every kind of 00ber weapon known to man. Sooner or later somewhere in the world, a bunch of clowns are gonna blow up a busload of people, take another school hostage, or drive a car bomb into a parkade in a busy office building killing and injuring possibly hundreds of people. Some attention grubbing dumbassed terrorist organization will claim responsibility for it and that's when the UN not the US intervenes. We find em together, we string em up together. We televise it around the world, crows plucking out the eyeballs from live terrorists crucified to old telephone poles. We allow the victims families to come on down and beat the holy crap out of these extremist retards. Public execution baby, they can do it, why don't we?

I hope I didn't offend anyone with this post. I guess I'm tiring of this whole war on terrorism shtick.
