YL...this was my return email....and now subsequently my post on the subject here.

I don't know....it depends on how well they take care of them. We bought a Jack Russell Terrier two Christmas' ago. We had her 2 months and found out she had red mange. Since she was so young and too hyper of a breed of dog....she wasn't a candidate to go through any treatments. We had to put her to sleep.

I immediately let the kennel where she was born at know because the mother should never be allowed to breed again. I bet you anything they are still selling those puppies and letting people go through what we did.

I'm not a big pet or animal lover....but I do love MY dogs and I cried my eyes out when we had to put that puppy to sleep. I felt like I was letting her down.

This might make an excellent front page news article. Pets are part of our families.

When I had my online group site, I had a section dedicated to this kind of information. It's too bad that all is lost now because I had a ton of info on puppy mills.

What goes on in these places are criminal and inhumane. How people can treat animals this way is beyond me. It's not just dogs either. It's any animal they want to raise for profit. They're underfed, used as birth slaves, beat, held in really small cages, so small that their paws and legs get deformed, they never get excersice. It's sickening! Most pet store dogs you see come from puppy mills. Lots of inbreeding in those places. It's really sad.

We bought a Jack Russell Terrier a couple of Christmas' ago...who after two months....had a severe case of the red mange. Due to her age and breed...it was decided the only humane thing to do was to have her put to sleep. It was a terribly sad situation.

The pet shop where we purchased her did refund the money. He told me he would report the breeder....but that they just change their name and keep on going without adhering to the rules. We later purchased our current boxer from him and he told me that he was no longer accepting puppies from anyone else but people he knew personally.

I think that would be the ticket. There are plenty of home breeders of any type of pet....that the mills shouldn't be used at all. If everyone refused to purchase unless they had the name/location of the local people who the pet came from....we could put the mills out of business.
