Default Barking Dogs

Does anyone know how to train a dog not to BARK at everything? Is this a stage or a trait?

I understand that if the dog barks at people walking by and then as the people move on down the road and out of site.....it appears to the dog as thought his 'baking' has worked. I just don't the dog barking at everyone in a neighborhood. (He isn't growling....just trying to sound protective.)

Some things that you could try is use a muzzle (which I really don't like at all) or a spray bottle. everytime the dog barks, spray him/her in the face with the water and say no bark with a voice of command. They catch on after awhile.

My dog listens pretty good. he barks a lot if someone comes into our yard or knocks on the door. all i have to do is raise my voice a bit and say his name and tell him shut up or knock it off or go lay down and he stops. He's a pretty good dog that listens pretty good. i don't have that problem and am glad i don't.

Some dogs bark at everything and others don't. Get the dog to hate a muzzle as star suggested and put it on the dog for a while after it barks. Maybe it will get the point that it shouldn't be barking. If the dog is no longer a pup though I don't think you'll have much success with curbing barking. Another thought is to take it to an obedience school, they can train your dog to do most anything, or so I hear.
