Are You A Smiler?
from Fayebelle
"(Dr.) Motto had a patient who committed suicide from the
Golden Gate in 1963, but the jump that affected him most
occurred in the seventies.
'I went to this guy's apartment afterward with the assistant
medical examiner,'he told me. 'This guy was in his thirties,
lived alone, pretty bare apartment. He'd written a note and
left it on his bureau. It said,'I'm going to walk to the
bridge. If one person smiles at me on the way, I will not
jump.'"
--New Yorker Magazine article, "Jumpers," by Tad Friend
I guess a good question would be....do you smile at the people you pass by?

I always smile at people that walk past me and sometimes I even say hello, how are ya? Hubby and I are both like that.
Probably because when we were managing high rise apartment buildings, we did that all the time from morning until night. you couldn't help it, people say hello, you do it back. now we're in that habit and sometimes we get funny looks from people because they don't expect a hello or a smile.
I'll stop and coo to babies in their strollers and talk to mom too. I'm way too friendly. LOL

I only smile at people who make eye contact or seem friendly enough.

I lived in the bigger cities and found that people there aren't as friendly as the smaller cities or towns. I grew up north of ontario in a small city. people there are so friendly; which is why i'm friendly. Now I live in a smaller city and find a huge difference. People take their time here to breathe the air and enjoy life. I hated living in the big city. Too fast paced and not friendly enough for me.

I always wanted to live in the big city and now that I'm here I can't wait to move back to a small town.

Very true, women want to go to women because they feel comfortable and men go to women cause they look good.

LOOL, Duke.
I smile. I don't think I smile to people or for them, if I'm happy, I simply smile.
I'd start conversations wih just about anyone who has a Golden Retriever or any type of dor, cat, rabbit, mouse... even snake. I'm a bit crazy about pets.
I also like to watch moms interact with their kids in buses. They are so lovely. Sometimes they play, other times they talk. I saw the cutest, smartest, funniest little Asian boy once... his eye were like drawn and his hair was perfectly straight and black... OMG, I just wanted to adopt him on the spot.
So yeah, I was smiling and I'm still smiling when I remember it.
Last night I got home late after talking to a friend of mine ( around 11, maybe 11:15) and was smiling at something... A car pulled over.
Grooose, can't a girl smile at 11 in the evening and NOT be mistaken with a prostitute? Men  !!!!

I smile at people if I think I know them or if they are smiling at me. I have a dreadful habit of not being able to place people sometimes, which can be rather embarassing socially.
Eg. Once on the street this guy smiled at me, I recognise him and smiled back, he greets me, we start talking. All the time I'm desperately trying to remember where I know him from. So I stick to general topics - how's work, family etc. Nothing, a complete blank. I finally confess I have no idea who he is and he admits he was having me on and tells me I was in the front row of a play he was in the night before.

I liked that story Meanon. I go through the same thing....but usually it's someone I met in a bar and I'm standing there trying to remember what the heck I said. HAHA!
