What holiday is it?
I'm trying to figure out why everyone is lighting off fireworks and getting drunk around town.... ok well the second part is normal. Apparently MA has tomorrow off and she said that it's Victoria Day, (OH YA!) isn't that the queen's birthday? Why do we celebrate that still? Oh well, a holiday is a holiday. I remember someone saying it's the May 2-4 weekend but I'm sure that has more to do with drinking a 24 case of beer on the first long weekend of "summer" which I'm guessing is where the name came from but maybe someone can shed some light on this for me. Obviously I'm a newb in the ways of the drunken college frat boy.

And just as well, it's beyond me why we still associate with that lame-ass monarchy.

I don't have an opinion on the monarchy itself....since I've never had to deal with it in any way. I've always wondered that about Canada too since internationally speaking....I identify Canada more with France than the UK. Could it be that they have alot of financial holdings in Canada?

No idea but I doubt it, maybe that's something Duke would know more about.

Paul are you suggesting that the day has been named after the "Victoria" cry her father made, when he finished 24 bottles of beer within 3 hours?
Well, with the British Royal family you never know.
As for the behavior of people you described it seems more like "I may act like an idiot, and I don't care if you give a sh*t"-day. We have that in the Netherlands. It is called Queensday, in which we normally would celebrate the birthday of the head of the state. Because her birthday is in January, we celebrate it on the birthday of her mother, in April.

My daughter and I slept through the entire day because of how "eventful" our nite was. We finally woke up at 5:30 PM and were both depressed over it. She's sicker than a dog and it looks like she (or one of the members of her family) passed it onto me.
I had a few things to do, got home at 10:00 PM, put in a movie and slept until noon today. My body is a complete mess and I'm not sure what to do about it now.

Victoria Day is I think celebrating Queen Victoria's birthday. it's called the May 2-4 weekend because that's when it's safe to plant your gardens. Shouldn't be anymore frosts after that weekend.
We have the queen on our money. Canada was linked to the monarchy way back when. we're not so much anymore though. I don['t know too much about that part of the history (since i always hated history) so that's all I know about the monarchy and canada.
Personally, I think that victoria day is still celebrated as an excuse for people getting a day off work and lots of drinking and fireworks.
Have you guys heard of the idiot kids that are letting off fireworks on buildings, cars, people, the streets at eachother in toronto and burlington? it's all over the news. a couple of families are homeless now because of it.
