UK Bound
We FINALLy got everything together and Chloe is leaving for the UK next Sunday. She is so excited and giddy....she isn't worth a crap for anything!
We ended up going with Virgin Atlantic because they arrive in London later than British Airways and Meanon won't have to make the trip so early.
Those flights are AWESOME. They have their own TV screen with 14 newly release movies, tons of games and all sorts of things to do. They even have it arranged for the passengers to play trivia games on there against each other and get prizes. In addition, for no extra cost, they offered to have an attendant stay with Chloe through customs and keep her in a private waiting room while waiting on Meanon to get there to pick her up. I thought that was real nice and I was quite relieved.

Well....she was planning to get up each day at 5:00 AM to begin getting used to the time difference. All that did was make the day go by too slow....so now she has resorted to trying to sleep thru the day...so it'll pass quicker. Ofcourse, I warned her of running out of stuff to do when she did the suitcase packing 3 weeks ago. HAHA!

Ask her to do some research into how to rid my garden of snails. I swear that word gets around whenever I move house and they all descend en masse for the thrill of seeing me freak every morning when I catch sight of them. I'd look myself but it's manic here and even reading about the damned things makes me queasy.
(PS got H in nursery on 27th)

I live in an area that has lots of slugs (snails without the shell), and I don't think you can get rid of them. There are tactics to keep them away from plants you don't want them eating, but you have to accept the fact that they will be in your garden.
If you like winning battles, slugs and snails hate it when they get salt poured on them. They hate it so much that their skin curls back and they writhe in what appears to be pain. I'm doubtful that it's pain though, I'm not sure if they have a central nervous system.

You can get a systemic insecticide such as Malathion or Lathion. It enters the plants sap through the roots and poisons any bug that tries to feed off of your plants. I'm pretty sure this is what they use to protect tomatoes and other vegetables from being eaten away.
You have to be careful when using these products though as they are poisonous to more than just animals and are not the most environmentally friendly products if used incorrectly.
I'm pretty sure I've also seen products in garden centers that focus on snails too but I've never had the problem myself so I never looked closely. The best bet is to go to your local (BIG) garden center and ask them because they'll know.

yes I use pellets but then the place is littered with dead snails, just as vile as live ones. Yuk. I'm talking a SEA of snails. the quantity is remarkable. The kids wont go out unless I clear them. I reckon it's because the garden was very overgrown before we moved in, bits of it still are. Either that or certain plants attract them. Or maybe they are more intelligent than we give them credit for and they can sense phobics - snail sport :angryblue: .

What if you were to light a fire in your backyard, that would surely do it?

Yes. I imagine it already.
London burning 1666. London (or wherever) burning 2005. On the bright side you got ride of the snails. On the less bright side, you got rid of the city.

Why don't you ask a neighbor or the local garden shop? They probably can suggest the best method for getting rid of them or which plant is feeding them.

I'm actually referring to small, controlled, spot fires. Way back in the olden days, farmers would burn the crap that couldn't be used when harvesting and the ash would enrich the soil for the next years crops.
Plus, I'm dukabor (hence Duke) whick means I look at every excuse possible to light a fire and run around naked screaming words at the top of my lungs that I don't understand.

It seems that you forget to set fires in most cases, though, .

HAHA Duke....I doubt in the UK...you can just start a fire in the yard in a whim.
I asked someone....they said to sprinkle SALT on the snails and in the area. It dries the slugs right up.
Meanon has guests and won't be online until the end of the weekend....I'll try to remember to tell her.

My friend lives in a relatively dense residential area and is right on the big street for my city (small city, maybe 35,000 just north of detroit) and the cops seem to have a response time of around 1 minute normally. Anyway, right after high school ended we decided to have a book burning (someone stole about 10 copies of the book HOLES from the school, they took a BS film lit class and were forced to read it and decided it deserved a burning). Long story short, I left for around 10 minutes to drive someone home, and when I came back they had already started and put out the fire, which mostly was gasoline. I saw video of this and there was a giant black smoke plume that temporarily obscured the main road. No cops or fire trucks came.
