Stranded at Work
Well it's been snowing now for close to 12 hours straight and it looks like there's no way I can get home tonight. As it is, I barely made it up my street to get to work this morning and now we've gotten anywhere between 6 - 8 inches of additional white stuff on top of it.
I just take lunch break and drove to a Wendy's close by which is mostly flat and it was hairy, to say the least. My T-Bird is not the best car to drive even in the rain so snow doesn't help much.
Anyone else ever been stranded at work?

Re:
Well I'm not going to put my safety at risk. If it looks like going home will be too hairy then I'll spend the night at work and get all the cutting done. At least that way when I finally do go home, everyone else will have work to do (assuming people come to work tomorrow).
I heard on the radio that earlier, a helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing on Highway 1 (our freeway), every hill has vehicles and rigs stuck all everywhere, there is a 29 car pile up on Canada Way and many major roads are shut down or under limited operation.

Re:
The problem here Random is that it doesn't snow on the west coast because we're at or below sea level and live in what is considered a rainforest. We can sometimes go a whole winter without so much as one snowflake at sea level yet this year we've had three storms. One was pretty short lived in duration but this one and the first dropped a lot of snow for an area not used to snow.

I have never been stuck at work. Sorry to hear your weather is so bad. I have been stuck at home in snow storms. Stay safe and if that means staying at work than do so. Hope you can get out tomorrow.

Re:
Well I actually just hopped in my car and made it home safely.
The problem is that I think we have one snowplow for every 100,000 people that live here. That may sound silly but I don't think I'm that far off. If any of the roads I drove on were plowed, they did a horrible job and there was no sand dropped anywhere. The roads were ghost white as if I was driving on a mountain pass rather than in a major west coast city.
Pathetic really.

Ease on the gas, ease off the gas.
Easy on the brakes so they don't lock up.
Corners slow, in and out, careful not to turn the wheel too sharp.
I generally repeat that in my head when I'm driving in snow for the first few times a year.
glad ya got home

Re:
I just take my time. If I have a hill in front of me, I usually take it up or down in the lowest gear possible and allow the car to crawl under it's own power.
For braking, I always do a "test skid" in a safe area to gauge my stopping power but I slow down long before I ever need to stop.
Corners aren't so bad for me since my car is huge and heavy but I go slow in and slow out anyway.

Ignition on
4x4
Romp around
See how far you can go in a straight line sideways while in 4x4
I love winter driving. I hate other winter drivers.
