Senior forum
Duke, would you consider putting in a Senior forum for us that are coming down (slowly) on the other side of the hill?
Issues like Menopause, Alzheimers, Dementia, Death, Illness could be discussed.
I'm probably your most senior member (don't even think of mentioning the word "oldest" or I will come after you with my cane! ) so maybe I would be the only one posting these issues with myself.
Speaking of Seniors...here's a few things passed around our Coffee table at work today...maybe you've already read this or maybe not...but here it is again...us Seniors like to repeat ourselves...
What are Senior's Worth?---We are Worth a Fortune!
Remember, old folks are worth a fortune! With silver in our hair, gold in our teeth, stones in our kidneys, lead in our feet and gas in our stomachs.
Dear.....
I have become a little older since I saw you last, and a few changes have come into my life. Frankly, I have become a frivolous old gal. I am seeing five gentlemen every day. As soon as I wake up, Will Power helps me out of bed. Then I go to see John. Next, Charley Horse comes along, and when he is here he takes a lot of time and attention. When he leaves, Arthus Ritis shows up and stays the rest of the day. He doesn't like to stay in one place very long, so he goes from joint to joint.
After such a busy day, I'm really tired, and go to bed with Ben Gay. Oh, yes, I'm also flirting with Al Zymer.
P.S. the minister came to call on me the other day. He said at my age I should be thinking a lot about the hereafter. "I do all the time," I told him. "No matter where I am--in the kitchen, in the hallway, in the living room--I ask myself, "What am I here after?"
Oh, BTW, I am not quite a Senior yet, but I sure am looking forward to it as long as I have my health and sense of humour, I'll be just f-i-n-e!!!

I have no problem with it at all, in fact I think it's a great idea. How does everyone else feel about this idea and where do you vision it sitting in the actual layout of the forums?

I think it's an excellent idea! I think it should either be in the general issues or the adult forum. What a great idea luba!

The only problem I have with it at this time is that we have no senior forums. I think it's a fantastic idea, but I recently got rid of or combined a bunch of stagnant topics to keep forum scrolling to a minimum. I wonder if maybe this should be a poll?

It's now a poll, we'll see what the community thinks.
Thanks for the suggestion Luba, if you have others, please feel free to ask.

I DO think it's a good idea. We will have to get some new members though...so Luba isn't off posting to herself. HAHAHA! (Actually, I qualify close enough....would put in a sad face but my *Smiley* click won't work)

Well so far yes is in the lead. I'll keep the poll up for a few more days before doing what the vote says to do.
What I may do if the vote stays yes is just make it a category and combine all issues of the elderly into one. That way everything can be discussed and I can break out the seperate issues later as the forum becomes more popular.

that sounds like a good idea or maybe put in some sub-boards under the category.

Unfortunately, the more subcategories I add, the bigger the forums get, thus more scrolling. I'd much rather combine issues for now and if the forum takes off I can justify splitting the categories.

So does this mean when I'm talking about Alzheimers, Death, Arthritis, Heart Disease, etc. it'll be all together?
What if I want to discuss the love lives of us Seniors, we do have them you know!

It may start off all lumped together under one category called Seniors Forum. In that forum you can talk about anything you want and if it's titled to fit into a future category such as:
- Menopause: Health and Fitness
- Dating the dead: Marriage and Dating
- Taking each day, one rascal scooter length at a time: The Golden Years
If the posts are titled as obvious as above, they can be split into new sub-categories should traffic in the Senior Forum dictate the need for expansion.
If you've heard this before, please disregard the following, if not, then it's good knowledge.
To properly explain why I'm sticky at times in regards to new forums and categories, you need look no further than our Kid Forum. It has nothing going on in it which essentially makes it a waste of space. I know that sounds harsh but it is a fact. Now to view that forum, you have to use the wheel on your mouse and scroll to the bottom of the forums. The amount of scrolling involved depends on your screen resolution settings between monitor and video card.
This site (and all Lifesupporters.com Network sites) are constructed to fit best on 1024 x 768 but will work at 800 x 600. The lower your resolution 800 x 600 or less, the more scrolling required to see the entire site. This actually bothers more people than you think, myself being one of them, which is the reason for me trying to keep the forums as compressed as possible.
For those of you who've been around a while, you'll remember a time when we had many more forums, a number of which rarely saw new posts. I don't believe this is a formula for building a thriving web community so if I see a dead forum, I'll either eliminate it or combine it with another forum and adjust the title accordingly.
In case your wondering, we still do have the kid forum but more for the reason that this site is marketed as a "Family Friendly Site". I can't market a site like this, stating it's safe for all ages and not have an area for kids. I could but it would look kinda funny.
Does the above make any sense? I hope it comes across merely as informative instead of ignorant as I think it does. To be honest with everyone here, I love this place and have put a fair chunk of my life into it. It's been awesome as I have such great members and more content than many sites that have been online 5 times as long (look around, you'll be amazed). In order to keep growing this site though, I really want to offer relavent content that gets people posting in busy forums. Expanding to include topics that we currently have no audience for without a trial run is a step backward instead of forward IMHO.
Of course, all of this is open for your comments which I'd love you all to feel free to express.
Sincerely,
Ken
