Easily that much and more depending on what you want. It only makes sense to create rigs powerful enough to host several games instead of one or two. Provided you have the bus speed, HD speed, and RAM you should be able to get 6 games or more on one server.
The other thing to consider is that each game out there has different slots available as low as 4 - 6 up to 64 player and beyond. You also want to be able to offer Teamspeak and/or Ventrillo so you can see why you have to fork out the bux.
On top of all that, you want redundancy in your Internet Connection as well or possibly host with a few different carriers, that way your always pinging well and always online.
Believe me when I say, Canaca does none of this.

I'm not a fan of AMD so I won't be purchasing anything they have to offer, ever. I'll stick with proven technology and as far as I'm concerned, Xeon is the way to go. I know it costs a bit more but you'll find way more Xeon powered servers online that pretty much anything else.
You have sparked my interest though so I'll see if I can price one out. Also, is that $6000 USD, remember exchange ;-)
It's a m00t point really anyway because its going to be some time before I can afford to even get started. I hope to have enough accounts setup on a reseller program that I can take with me when I start up. Hopefully these accounts will help offset some of the price of the internet connection and the rest will likely come from a business loan.

I still cant understand your not using AMD, even though they blow away intel chips, especially as a gamer.

I did use AMD, I still have my AMD as my second rig in my network but hate it. It's unstable and runs a little hotter than I'd like.
I'm not sure where your getting your info on AMD blowing away Intel based chips for games though. Do you have some benchmarks you can show me because this is news to me.

Here is an article, where the AMD chip is better in every test. extremetech realworld gaming test
i have some other benchmark pics of fps, but my image host keeps shrinking them to unreadable sizes
