No, you won't get a secret GF from them. You can get a secret GF shortly afterwards.

I thought you could use the Tent at the save point (option to save should not be greyed out)? Admittedly I never needed to use a tent at that point in the game.

Set Battle speed to slowest.

Use Zell and Irvine to heal. Remember, because Oil Blast is a gravity based attack, damage is dependent on the HP you have. So it is better to have 3 characters with 600 HP than 1 with 1000 HP and 2 with 400 HP.

You can rely on Limit breaks. Have Squall in critical condition, and use Zell and Irvine to draw+cast Cure on themselves and Squall.

When all characters can survive an attack, make use of the "wait" trick, so Zell and Irvine can immediately heal once damage is inflicted.

Give both Zell and Irvine the Item command as well, to use the Phoenix Downs, in case one ally gets killed. And GF command, so the GFs can serve as shields, should the need arise.

And try to give Ifrit GF to Squall, with Str+20% and Str+40% junctioned as bonus abilities. And try to use the magic that gives you the highest Str ability.

If you really can't defeat the Oilboyles you may want to resort back to the previous save.

Or start over, so you can get all the secret GFs. It may take some extra time, but it probably will make the game easier.

Same strategy applies though.

You could even use Squall at first to draw+cast Cure magic, so that all characters have 600-1000 HP, and then it becomes much easier for just 2 characters to keep HP up.

You could also set the ATB to wait. That will help a lot as well.

I played 8 but prefered 7. If you have an Xbox360 you can get a game called lost oddessy which is made by the original FF team and is fantastic but a complete time eater!

Seeing that only two FF games were ported to the PC (I am not into consoles at all), I have played both of them extensively. Both are good games, and my preference is a bit variable. I guess that has to do with the frustration I run into in some challenges.

Lost Oddisey is an excellent game as well.
