how do you tell a true freind from a bad freind

That is always hard to do.

The best thing to do is to consider friends' behavior:

such as:
1) Making fun of you (or anyone) at your expense
2) Whether or not they consider the effects of their actions on others.
3) 'sudden' interest in you, since you bought a certain game (replace with whatever). The game will wear off, and then the friend may well dump you.
4) same taste / interests.

Usually the way they interact with others will tell you a lot about them. If Jack says to Kyle: "You are great for doing this", and behind Kyle's back "Kyle is an idiot", you know you should not get involved with Jack at all.

But it is hard, and everyone will run into these false friends a couple of times. No way of avoiding it really.
