It's one of those situations for me where you can't miss what you never had. I've never been sad about. It's just weird and I don't understand all that happened before I ever knew what was going on, but it's something I don't dwell on. Maybe it was all for the better. As long as I'm not in a situation where I'm dating somebody who turns out to be my half-sister. That's a soap opera twist I could do without.

OK, now that I'm past 100 posts and feel comfortable around here, I'll expand a bit more on my upbringing...

My mother was 18 when she was preggers with me, fresh out of high school. For whatever reason, my father didn't stick around and to this day I have never met him or his side of the family. Supposedly they had gotten married, I dunno, though I do have his last name.

My grandparents (her side of the family, naturally) became my legal guardians and they were the ones who raised me. They passed away in the 90s (I was already out on my own post-college during this time), so my mother (who was, like me, an only child) is the only immediate family I have.

I'm sorry to hear of your father taking off; I can't believe how often I've heard that story. For the life of me I can't understand how a parent can just up and leave their child; it's a mystery to me. I can't say I know you all that well yet but from what I've seen you seem to be a very decent person.

I also wanted to say that your mother is no longer your only family because you now have us
