Thrift Store Worker Returns $30,000 Found In Donated Clothes - AP Associated Press

Quote:
A thrift store worker in Southern California says she didn't think twice about returning $30,000 she found in donated clothing.

Barbarita Nunez was sorting clothes on Tuesday at the Veterans Thrift Store when she found a small box. Inside was an envelope of cash. Nunez said at first she thought the money was fake. But just in case, she gave it to her supervisor.

The money turned out to belong to a woman who had recently died. It was returned to her family, who gave Nunez a cash reward.
It's nice to read stories like this. You rarely find something like this reported. You read about greed and destruction the majority of the time, so this little relfection of hope in human kindness is refreshing.

This article inspired me, so I thought I would share.

This woman did a GREAT thing...while the Thrift Store here was vandalized and vandals hung some of the clothes on a tree outside.

I do have a concience, I've returned lost wallets, I've given back money when too much is given to me, however if you accedently misplace 30000$ I'm sorry but you don't deserve it in the first place. I'd be able to live with myself if I found a large amount of money like that, I'd assume it was drug money [Considering I live in the meth capital of the world, it's not a far stretch]

Just the other day I had an old lady hand me a 100$ on $8-something worth of pizza and she told me to keep it, in my mind i *knew* she thought it was a $10. Did I keep it? No. I made sure she realized what she was handing me and she gave me an extra $2 for being honest.

I'm not an *******, however $30,000 is quite a large amount of money, money the family obviously didn't even know existed, right now [knowing most families] they're probably fighting over who gets to keep the money and their family probably fell apart over it. My grandma isn't dead yet and my mom and uncle are already at eachother's throats over who gets her ****, I know people, and I'm realistic.

Thanks for judging me.

I don't know if I'm more inspired by the Thrift Store worker returning the money or the family giving her a cash reward.

Seems that some people look at me like I have stolen from them when I return their lost items instead of a reward or even a 'thank you.'

If I did find $30,000, my first thought would probably have been to keep the money too.

Thinking the money was from drugs would've probably been my second thought, but that would only be more reason to turn it in. Most people in that business can track down where they hid their money pretty fast with intimidation. I sure don't want someone chasing me for their $30,000 they think I have and killing me over it.

Thrift Stores keep records of who donates what. I'm willing to bet that someone in that family would have remembered which box they put it in eventually. There wouldn't have been anything they could have done about it once they realized what they had done, but it is the principle of it.

When the StolenSideKick Story first came out, I thought that this guy was an idiot for trying to get a phone back. It was a very young mother who found it in a taxi cab. Why go to all the trouble to get the phone back, just for the principle of it?

Even when everyone thought the SideKick Story was bogus, I still followed it religiously. Through the course of this great internet drama, I learned some things from it.

A.) I'm not in charge of judging who deserves what in this world. Sure, I have my opinions about things, but boy did I misjudge this young mother with the SideKick.

B.) Today it was a SideKick, but tomorrow it could be an elder woman's Social Security check or her medication.

I don't think TKDLady was trying to judge you. With your "Lol" comment, I think she thought you were teasing and she joked back. I could be wrong, but that's how I read it.

I was trying to joke with you FB. Sorry if it was misinterpreted. Some times I think 99% of what you say is just to get a reaction anyway. Again, sorry for my poorly worded comment. I should have put a smilie of some type at the end. This is the only bad thing about posting. Without hearing the person, you can't tell by just their writing whether they are being funny or not.

I disagree about the misplacement thing. If you are starting to suffer from dementia or Alzheimers chances are that you simply don't remember what you do with anything half of the time. Stuff can end up in the weirdest places, and you simply will "forget" about it.
