Beethoven's Ninth Symphony...humorous!

A number of years ago, the Seattle Symphony was performing Beethoven's Ninth under the baton of Milton Katims.
At this point, you must understand two things:


1. There's a long segment in this symphony where the basses don't have a thing to do. Not a single note, page after page.
2. There used to be a tavern right across the street from the Seattle Opera House; it was favored by local musicians.

Don't know if it is a real story, but I can imagine it must be a frustrating experience. Same holds for trombone (in the fifth symphony), and some minor instruments like the triangle.

I like this one. I wonder what the audience thought as a portion of the orchestra left the stage. I would be furious too if I was the conductor. In for a penny, in for a pound.
