"By some estimates, more than 140,000 of the one million or so people who had been ordered to evacuate the coast as Ike drew near may have tried to tough it out. Many of them evidently realized the mistake too late and pleaded with authorities in vain to save them overnight.

Some emergency officials were angry and frustrated that so many people ignored the warnings.


"When you stay behind in the face of a warning, not only do you jeopardize yourself, you put the first responders at risk as well," Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said."

If you were given a warning to leave, would you stay or would you go? If you stayed, what would your reasons be?

If I lived where they live I would have left. It is damn selfish of them to stay and then expect to be rescued, putting the life of the rescuer in jeopardy because you are an idiot. If you are ordered to evacuate and stay then realize it is at your own peril. The weather channel, on Friday, had a warning message that kept flashing saying "Leave Galveston now or die". Cleans up the gene pool in my opinion. I know that is harsh but they live on an Island for goodness sake. They could have easily left and gotten out of harms way. What they would leave behind is just stuff. Your life is way more important than your possessions. They can be replaced, you can't. They had plenty of warning and could have packed up their more precious memories, like pictures and things. There is nothing I would stay for under those circumstances. I think when they finally told people to evacuate for Katrina, the police went door to door and if you were staying they got the name of your next of kin so they could be notified of your death.

It really depends on the circumstances. If your loved one is in hospital, under strict orders NOT to be moved, I'd be staying.

I understood they did evacuate the hospitals; am I wrong?

I saw a patient interviewed who wasn't happy to be moved because he was still so ill.

You could be right. However, with back surgery such moves could lead to permanent paralysis. Then I'd be willing to take some chances. A disease like Marburg's disease? You'd be staying, because it would be a health hazard to be moved (it is highly infectious, and lethal, with no "real" cure).

For something as "simple" as chemotherapy, sure as hell, I'd be moving.
