Why dark humor is sometimes the best medicine.
I confess- not only am I the person that reads Reader's Digest in the Dr's office- I have it delivered to my house
I found a recent story regarding Dark Humor very interesting

What is it about humans that makes us want to laugh when logically we should cry? Well, for one thing, dark humor is a form of bravery.

Now personally- I always found those people that can "never be serious" more than a bit annoying. I thought it showed a serious lack of maturity.
After reading this though- I was amazed to see that dark humor is actually a GOOD quality.

I am not surprised.
I used the following as my quote here for quite some time:
"The cleverest of all, in my opinion, is the man who calls himself a fool at least once a month." - Fyodor Dostoevsky

That's me though, I am the ones that can never be serious. I constantly joke with everyone. Funny you should mention this, because I've always said "well there goes one of them people that think maturity has something to do with me never being serious" and I've always thought those people to be stuffy or just unwilling to laugh at a situation.

Re: Why dark humor is sometimes the best medicine.
Yes I am one of those that likes to joke a lot and I often make inappropriate jokes about dark subjects. Although my family would keep telling me not to and I haven't as much as I used to and now I find myself fighting an anxiety that pretty much brought me to a stand still. Laughter has helped me, but I can't help but wonder if I hadn't curbed my jokes as much if I would be doing better.
But still, laughter is the best medicine and I'm going to work on that.

it's not good for the bereaved eg to avoid laffing and living like normal people-maybe laffing at the actual catastrophe is out of whack tho

Re: Why dark humor is sometimes the best medicine.
I have heard of people who laugh at funerals and it isn't because they think it is funny. I think it is just how they deal with stress. I don't think they have much control over it either.

Re: Why dark humor is sometimes the best medicine.
I can be serious and never laugh at other's distress (unless they do!) but I do often notice that many people, myself included, find that the emotional intensity of facing scary or difficult situations is lightened by seeing the humour in their own human condition. It can help to share this with others as long as it's a laughing with, rather than a laughing at - it just doesn't seem as bleak when you can laugh at it. Of course it doesn't apply to everything, nor should it.

Re: Why dark humor is sometimes the best medicine.
A couple of years ago we were in a wake, we had to sit all night with the deceased, the closest of the families we sat down and started to drink teas and eat snacks we all hadnt had a decent thing to eat all day seeing as we had been in the morgue.
I remember sitting back quietly and observe everyone, i saw some smiling and some others were actually giggling and remembering the good things of the person who had died.
I even started to smile and giggle and in the back of my mind i felt awful that its amazing how life continues and everyone just moves on after a death, even a violent one.

Re: Why dark humor is sometimes the best medicine.
While at my father's funeral we all had a great deal of laughs. Anyone that knew him also knew that he didn't want a bunch of people crying to much. My father was also one of those that never took anything serious.
It's a worn out saying but I believe it to be true, "Laughter is the best medicine"
