I posted this over at
International-Gathering and I thought I could do some good here.....
This isn't a proven fact or anything and I cant find any info about it anywhere, but I want to tell people about my experience with children and asthma.
When my daughter was about 2 years 9 months, she starting coughing at night, it wasn't much at first, but after a week or so it increased dramatically, so we started looking for the reason. All of her symptoms pointed at croup, and got her medication for it etc etc etc.
This didn't help at all so we looked for more answers. We didn't think it was asthma as there were no other signs of it to indicate that it was asthma.
I sat down and thought about it for awhile and I remembered something that I had seen about 5 years earlier.
It was a study done on pillows, not for asthma or anything but for what the pillows condition was after a certain amount of use.
Unfortunately, I can't remember the exact details and haven't been able to find that study again, but basically a pillow that was just 2 years old was filled with 50% bacteria.
This meant that the inner fibers that filled the pillow had been squashed tightly or just eaten away by the bacteria.
If you have ever seen an old pillow that was lumpy, chances are that those lumps weren't the insides of the pillow, they were lumps of bacteria.
Anyway after thinking about this, I figured out that my daughter may be inhaling bacteria, not to be confused with dust mites or just dust. This was bacteria she was breathing in.
We simply replaced the old pillow with a new one, and after a few days the coughing stopped completely.
It happened again about 7 months later, so we now replace all the pillows in the house every 6 months.
Oh and BTW the more expensive the pillow the more money you spend for the same problem, it's bacteria and nothing to do with allergens.
I work at a childcare centre, and a parent came in one day with ventolin for his child to have during her stay there, as the doctor had diagnosed her with asthma. When I asked him about his daughters symptoms, I told him about my daughter and the pillow she had. He said that he would change her pillow and guess what, the little girl doesn't need a puffer and the doctor said that she hasn't got any signs of asthma.
Yep you guessed it, I felt so good about it too.
