Hi Heather,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you - I was not in my office for part of last week. I read the report about your son and I was thinking about this situation and have some thoughts about it:
1. Perhaps, TMS might be a good therapy for your son, but it the outcome is unpredictable - he can have either a little (or no) improvement or large and remarkable improvement - unfortunately we don't know yet the characteristics that favor a good outcome - this is part of our research.
2. Even if he has no improvement, this treatment is not associated with adverse events - our team in Sao Paulo (I am affiliated with a TMS laboratory in Sao Paulo) has recently stimulated a child with only 18 months of age.
3. If you want to try this treatment, there are some practical issues: here in Boston, we are only allowed to stimulate adults as this treatment is still experimental. Therefore, you would have to look for another centers of TMS in US or abroad. I don't know any other center of TMS in US that is stimulating children with stroke - I know one in Canada and the one in Sao Paulo (Brazil) - which I am also affiliated.
Therefore, if you want to pursue this treatment for your son, you would have two options: wait until this treatment be approved for Children in US or look for these other options abroad.
With best wishes,
