Default Living with a disibility

The threads today are spinning in to others like crazy!! Witch is a very good thing, but this is a spin off another thread.

I can only understand from a parents and a daughters view point what it is like to take care of a person with a disibility. In the last 5 years of my life my father has become blind and my son had a stroke witch caused brain damage. We are now constantly surrounded by deaf, blind and autistic people.

When I look at these people living everyday lives, going to school, getting an education and not letting the "illness"' beat them I see Hero's, fighters, and legends. It takes a huge amount of courage to not let things beat you.

I have Cerebral Palsy. I will probably post then post more later after i think about it some.
For more info:
http://health.yahoo.com/ency/adam/000716

I was born with the right side of my body weaker, i have a limp, its hard for me to use my right hand. My parents were told by doctors that i would never be able to walk or talk. I spent most of my early life in physical thearpy. I was able to talk at a normal age, but walking took a very long time, i had to start with a walker, then a cane. When I got into school then it was tough to fit in, i couldnt write with a pencil because i couldnt push hard enough. The hardest part is the time it takes to do things or the fact that i cant d everything that i want to. Most days i dont notice it at all, other days i get very self concious to the point where i dont want to go outside.

People often offer help and the thing that i want most is to be able to do something myself. i dont think im a hero, just somebody who worked hard and didnt give up even when i wanted too.

I admire people who have experienced events or were born with defects that may make everyday life a bit more challenging than it is for many of us. My problem is that I often feel sympathy for those less fortunate and it actually sickens me to do it because it's the last thing that many people want.

I even sound ignorant in my response even though I don't mean to. I hope I didn't come across wrong.

Your fine Duke, you are like most people, it just isnt what we want, i want to be treated like a normal person, but i dont expect you to do any different you wouldnt understand if i didnt tell you.

SH i am really drunk and it makes me feel better about myself, dont let Noah drink for as long as possible, it is a huge escape from problems, and it is bad. I knew i was going to drink when i first posted, for me, i drink, and it will drink more as i go, im equal as a drunk, that is why i like it.

im gonna sleep this off then post more.

Duke, I understand how you feel about this because I'm the same way, I can't help it. I do feel bad for those who have to struggle in life because of a disability but on the same hand, I do feel proud for them for everything they can do and will accomplish.

DA, you've accomplished a lot! You should be very proud of your accomplishments. way to go friend!

I have a 4 year old niece who's autistic and appeleptic. She was 2 years old when we found out. We think it was caused by her appeleptic seizures. She used to have so many of them it was really sad. She is the cutest little girl, always smiling and doesn't have a care in the world. At first we all felt very sad about her illnesses but now, I think she is somewhat of a hero. She goes to autism classes everyday on top of going to school and has come a very long way. She's talking more, listening and paying attention better then she used to. She's a happy little girl.

DA I think it is admirable that you are so far away from your folks getting an education to help your future I know alot of disabled people who don't want anything more than a social security check every month and that's pretty sad.

I am sure some psych/ emotional problems come with living with a disibility my father and son both have them but honestly most people do, and won't admit it. I think so far from what I have learned from you your are a great accet to any community. Your very smart and very driven.

Gosh, DA, I never would have guessed. You're always so hard on yourself... I remember a pic you put on LS last year, on a beach! It was really cool .

I cannot imagine the work, the will and the self esteem you must have to keep fighting. I think you have to continue to do this.

DA, I also remember many members of a certain community's concern with your drinking beer all the time. There's so much for you out there that ... you'd really waiste your spirit to be less determined right now!

BTW, I totally hate your for studying advertising  ! I want to work in marketing and I'm having such a hard time . Anyway, I think it was incredibly brave of you speak about your physical condition. IT's your menthal one that's beginning to worry me...

My disability is part of the reason why i am hard on myself, i dont feel that i fit in, which is why i love the internet, nobody knows if i dont want them to. I am constantly working on my appearnce, it is the hardest thing for me to accept, i lift and try to build muscle.

Why dont you go to school for marketing then? i enjoy marketing, and business.

My mental condition isnt great, but i know its an issue, self eesteem, drinking and all that, but i talk to the people here and i am in couselling, both individual and group and they help me with that stuff.

Great idea Duke! I know most of us are old friends who have a great time just goofing around with each other.....but we all stand in the common cause of hoping we can help someone or give them an answer to help their life in some way.

Due to the diversity of the membership and their willingness to openly share their own life's high points and low points.....we have a good chance of meeting the goals of this forum.

I've gotten a good start on it and think the template is mostly done. I now have to add content and links.

You know DA, the biggest step forward is the one you've already made, talking to people and getting some help. Just as the negative stuff can spiral out of control, so the positive steps will build on each other. Self esteem is the key. When you have that, you'll feel you fit in most of the time and when you don't, it will matter less. You've achieved a great deal already, I hope you're proud of that DA.
