I am guessing the injury is to the part of her brain that controls her everyday speech, but the part that "recognized" the NFL speech is still working and has become the core for generating speech.

I was reading about this at work today and there was another woman back when WWII was going on who was from sweden but wound up with a german accent. How much would that have sucked back then... (no offense to any germans or anything, but the timing would have been horrible!)

Actually Sweden did not suffer that much in WW2; it dealt quite succesfully with the axis and the allies, and was not occupied by the Germans or the allies.
It would have been a far worse fate for a Polish Jew.
