I've started chewing (regular) gum in an attempt to smoke less. Since my wife got pregnant I'm only smoking outside, which has cut down my smoking considerably (like 2/3 less), and with the chewing gum I'm trying to cut down even more. Actually by now I kinda feel emberassed and ashamed that I wasn't prepared to do the same just for my wife's sake, let alone my own.
It works good for me, mainly since I already detested smoking while eating/drinking, so chewing gum does keep me from smoking, as long as I keep chewing. It would be nice if it also helped get my weight down a bit, since I need to shed a bunch of pounds myself as well. And now I think of it, it probably helps against eating in the evening.
I never stick my gum somewhere, I eat it. I bite tiny bits off and with my tongue I skillfully (

) roll them into pinhead size balls and swallow those 1 at a time. It's another habbit I should get rid off.
