You think you know somebody...
We "know" a man who was a neighbour of ours. He lived with a young woman who has been on a wheel chair most of her life, and she had a young daughter. When the daughter's father left them, the man I thought I knew moved in with her and looked after her and her daughter. He was so good to the both of them, with his shiny disposition and friendliness, I really loved the way he looked after them and we became friendly, my husband, he and I. When she died, he was heartbroken, and was not allowed to see the little girl anymore. Every time he talked about it, he cried.
In yesterday's newspaper it said "he was convicted of 27 criminal charges after he was arrested following a detailed tip from a local woman who saw him looting a vehicle in broad daylight. After hauling him in, Police laid 32 separate offences against him, including 23 counts of theft from a vehicle, seven commercial break and enters--even three thefts from pop machines. He pled guilty to most of the counts. He is going to jail for two years.
The odd thing about all this, is I noticed our window screen had been pried loose from one of our back rooms and our neighbour thinks he is probably the one that did it. Seems a likely surmise....
I keep trying to remember how he looked after a disabled girl and her daughter....I find it so difficult to "take in" about who he has become...

do we ever really know anyone? :? The fact is, most people aren't entirely what we think they are, it can turn out to be scarey sometimes.

Him being a burgler and a thief isn't incompatible with his being a carrying and affectionate person.
He is paying for his wrong doings right now. All people have something evil in them, some let it take over their live, other fight it... Like Duke said, we never ever really know anyone .

we always think we know our neighbors but we really don't. we don't see what happens behind those closed doors. When the guy next door gets caught in something criminal, neighbors say "but he was so nice, he didn't seem the type".
I don't get too friendly with my neighbors. although, the old couple next door I talk to almost on a daily basis. everytime i do i'm thinking i shouldn't get so close to them because things happen.
There's a guy that lives across the street that used to be one of my brother's best friends when they were teenagers. they did something stupid together and did jail time together back then too. I hated this guy and used to be so mean to him on a daily basis. he was the long haired idiot type and just grossed me out. I recognized him right away because he's still looks the same. he even has the same stupid hair cut!! LOL!
anyways, I catch him looking at me once in awhile. he's probably wondering where he knows me from. I'm almost tempted to talk to him but then i stop myself. He still drinks a LOT and i'm sure he's still into the drugs (he used to be a big acid fan) but he's quiet. doesn't bother anybody and just had a girl move in with him last fall. I wonder if he'll ever figure out who i am and ask me about my brother on day. He might not even remember me or my brother he was always so high on drugs back then. LOL!!

The problem is, after his daughter died, he had nothing to live for. No good cause to spend his time on. Nothing - and the wondrous world of the human psyche can turn that grief into many different things, and behaviors, which are completely unrelated (by logic of cause and effect).
It is just a sad tale...

I agree with Vautrin.
In addition, just because someone is a theif...doesn't mean he didn't truly love the girl or wasn't wonderful with her.
But as you pointed out....you don't ever know ALL of anyone. You only know portions. It's the 'other' portions of them that you have to guard yourself against. Granted, living next door to a thief would be more than discerning....but anyone you ever know in life has the capacity of disappointing you.
I'm sure it put you in turmoil though. Sometimes....life just SUX that way! I'm sorry Luba.

She must have identified you by the tator. Also very interesting to note, in which thread it happened.

Maybe twink has d00key on the brain. It's not your fault twink, two out of three women surveyed have the same problem. ;-)
Now if I could only have these two women thinking good thoughts then I'd be in business :?

Duke, you have tactics at your disposal to make these women forget their thoughts, or forget to think ;-)

That is not really a problem. Some people don't need a relationship with a SO to be happy. They can enjoy themselves in other ways (running a website, gaming, doing something for the community, whatever it is that makes them happy).

I'm like that....but I always wonder if I would be happier if I were to actually HAVE a relationship....rather than avoiding them.
