You were quite close GG. Boer is the Dutch / Afrikaans word for farmer. The Boers made the Great Trek in the 1830's in order to find new land. This led eventually to the Boer-Zulu conflicts, and the establishment of Afrikanerdom. And at the turn of the 20th century the Boers fought a war with the British - the war in which concentration camps were first used.
