I've lent money to a friend when she didn't know how she was going to make it because her partner wasn't working, and gave her all the time she needed to pay it back. I guess I remember this incident because she was SO grateful and started to cry; and she is not a cry-er. She knows I'm anything but rich so she appreciated it, paid me back about two months later, with a gift and a card that I deeply treasure. So you see, she gave me more in return than I ever gave her...
When my friend Dave was in the hospital with Michael there was a point when he and his ex were going to have to take shifts to stay with Michael 24/7 to stimulate him when he came out of his coma. His ex didn't have enough time off from work to be able to stay at the hospital another week or so and Dave had already been at the hospital almost a week with very little sleep and was worried how he was going to be able to do this by himself. I offered to come up after work for the next few nights so he could sleep and I woud stay with Michael. He was very appreciative but was able to work out with our company to share his vacation with his ex since she worked at the same company. I didn't have to do it but I was more than willing and was actually a little disappointed that I didn't get the opportunity. I wanted to get to know Michael and to help Dave but it was much better that his parents were with him instead of a stranger. I have since done quite a lot for Dave and will continue to help him as much as I can.
