Default What Words Make a Difference in How you Feel?

At work, when someone is bored and they look at the clock and say "OH NO, it's ONLY 9:00!" I say "Why not trying saying it's ALREADY 9:00?" Actually, some people ARE doing it either just to humour me or shut me up...

"It's going to be a GREAT day" vs. "It's morning already?"

Oh look, another boring day of doing nothing.

Yep, the pretty much sums up my existance lately at work....there is nothing to do, and there is no positive way to spin that after it happening day in and day out - it's just utterly boring and takes for ever for the clock to hit 5...

That is odd. I thought you were sent to Toronto to sort out the mess, and make the company healthy there? How come you can't do that much?

I've fixed all the problematic stuff as best I could. God help them if they ever get audited cause so much stuff is missing that I can't do anything about, but, it's better than it use to be.

Now, there is just no work. I literally did 15 minutes of actual work today and that was it - and not by choice.

I had my one year review recently and although it was pretty good, there was one part that bugged me. The VP here had told me that "I leave everything until the last minute, and I shouldn't because I never know what the next day holds" which not only irked me, but pissed me off. First off, I know what tomorrow holds - it's called didly squat. Second, it's called turn around time. We have turn around time for a reason - so we can charge more if people want it done on a rush basis. I've already proven that I can churn out more work which would normally take 2 people a good 5 hours with a couple of re-audits (corrections) in 3 hours with 100% accuracy.

But fine, you are the VP of the Toronto division and you know best. It's not like I actually make you way more money now than when you had the other girl. I'll do anything and everything as soon as I get it and then sit on my ass with nothing to do for the remainder of the day.

This is what has been happening lately. Even if I get a medium treasury direction for some 50+ share certificates, with a normal turn around time of 48 hours, I'll do it in about an hour and put it out the door.

All I hear day in and day out is how bad Mitzi was, and how she was dumb, her work was always wrong, how it's been such a hassle to go through and fix all the problematic transactions and I am getting thoroughly pissed off. Guess what, she might have done crappy work, but it was based on your ****ty directions and it should of never have been approved and sent out in the first place if you guys knew how to do your jobs!!!

I'm ranting now, but just thinking about it all is pissing me off even more, especially since I found out today how much vacation time everyone in this office is getting (triple mine) and also found out how much my coworker makes when she let it slip (18k more than me BEFORE bonus). Keep in mind this coworker can't do her job for ****. I'll purposely print something out that is done wrong, as well as correct it and print the good version out too - but I'll just give her the bad items to see if she'll put it through - and 8/10 times SHE DOES and I have to stop her before she approves it and let her know what she missed.

Somehow that just doesn't seem fair to me, but whatever I'm not bitter - and don't even get me started on trying to enforce policy, nobody listens to me or I get an "I'm too busy right now to do it right". Ugh. This place is a gongshow and I don't have the "power" I guess you could say, to fix it - because I'm the low man on the totem pole and they don't have to listen.

And now I need a smoke and a beer in the sun...argh

Freak. That is one messed up situation you are in, Weiser. I am curious why the people in Calgary sent you there, to be honest. Also with regards to the pay package; it seems you are actually losing to what you had there, as you won't have a chance at earning bonuses, simply because there is nothing to do.

Any chance of a transfer or of an improvement in the situation?

The work I do is top notch and done correctly. This means that correct fees are charged, items that come in that are deficient I reject, saving the company any liability due to fraud (which wasn't being done previous, anything that would come in would be processed pretty much). I follow procedure to the T and audit my work myself before I pass it off to my auditor, simply because if I mess something up, she probably won't catch it. This also makes her look good as we get zero complaints & no items are resubmitted due to our screw ups, when in reality, I am doing both her job and mine.

I've established a system for record keeping where we know where every single blank certificate is, was, and where it will be - which prior to me being there, never happened, ever.

I have done so much so far, and that is why I was sent here from Calgary. I haven't heard good job once yet though which is a little sad considering all the good work I do. I guess they have never heard the term positive reinforcement before...

The good thing about bonuses, and I made sure to ask this before I came here, is that bonuses are based on total profit between the three offices - so my bonuses are relatively the same, just a bit higher because I did get a promotion.

I do not regret coming here job wise, as I am learning new things on the client services side. I have been going to shareholder meetings, where I never would have done that in Calgary - it is just few & far between when I actually do get to do these things. It will pick up (eventually, I have no idea when) and I do have the backing of Calgary. They do know that this place wasn't run all that well, and they do know that procedures weren't really followed.

In fact I have a meeting when I go back to Calgary on July 10th with the executive VP (Rachel's dad) and my old manager Gail, who is the manager for all of operations (Vancouver, Calgary & Toronto). They want the low down on pretty much everything I can give them. Now, I don't want to be a rat because I do like the people I work with, but stuff really needs to change. I've already voiced my concerns with Gail in regards to the training needed for Vancouver when they open their securities cage in the next month solely because what happened here can NOT happen there and that will be one topic of discussion. I am actually going to see if it is possible for myself to go to Vancouver for a month just to train people. It probably won't happen because my old supervisor in Calgary really wants to go, but perhaps 2 people would be better than one. Who knows, but I'm asking anyways - like I said, we're not even busy enough to warrant me being in Toronto, it's kind of a waste actually.

So after beer, pizza and a couple episodes of 30 Rock, I am much more calm.

geez wieser you sound like you have a see-saw of a job, in one way its easy, but in another its really quite difficult.

i know you dont want to rat people out in toronto, but when you go for your meeting with the VP, be as honest as you can about whats going on, if there is proof of things such as turn around times getting better and things not being sent out wrong, then take it with you.

remember thats your number 1 in toronto, even if it doesnt say it on your badge. theres a reason you got sent there and the VP wouldnt of done so if he didnt think you'd do a great job, just let him know how good of a job you are doing!
