MySQL Help
I am trying to put a guestbook on my site and it requires me to setup a MySQL database. I keep getting an error saying it cannot connect to my local server through socket /tmp/mysql.sock. Is anyone smart on MySQL and how to set it up on Windows XP? I am very novice. Thanks.

Re: MySQL Help
I've never actually setup a local database server so I don't know if I can help you but if you need a database, I can supply you with one, no problem.

I downloaded a guestbook from the web and it has all these files in PHP and it uses mysql. I downloaded mysql and have it installed but when I run the php file to get the database to work it can't connect through the socket. I don't know where to look to fix it. The setup process was tedious and I don't know how to back out and start over.

Re:
you really dont want to host the guest book off your own system unless that is your web server and if its your server you dont want it running XP...but let duke set up a database for you and use that, much easier...i have gotten mysql to run a local system, but it is a pain to set up.

The problem is I need a canned system. I don't know how to do one on my own and the ones I have come across on the internet suck, except I like this one but it requires so much setup and I still can't get it working. I am pulling my hair out.

Re:
What is a canned system?
This site, and all of the others, are running off of mysql so it should be easy to setup, it won't affect your bandwidth on your local machine, and it won't be offline should your computer screw up, be turned off or hybernate.

I got a hold of the person who already had the guestbook I wanted and found out I could get it through my webhosting tools. We use the same web host. I didn't have to go through all the stuff I was going through earlier and it works now. Thanks for the support. I wish I could have understood what was wrong but I am too tired to care anymore. Maybe someday I will really get into this web building stuff and learn the tools better. For now, I am glad there are drag and drop tools that do not require too much effort.

Re:
i think the issue was that the mysql needed to be installed through the site not your machine, but anyway good that you got it figured out.

No, all the information I read yesterday talked about installing it on your own machine so you could develop databases for your websites and for other reasons. I don't know how it is working through my web host considering what I had to do but right now I don't care.

Re:
hmm, if you install it on your machine the database would be there not on the server. For dev purposes it would work, but you would still need an online databse for deployment
