Mowing the lawn...how do you do it?
Ok...so I've been a little sheltered. Alright, so A LOT sheltered.
How does one go about mowing the grass?
Do you follow a mowing patter around the lawn?

The way hubby cuts the grass (because I don't do that-outside work is his job) he starts at the edge of the yard and goes up to the other end then back again. does that all the way through the yard until it's all cut.
I've also seen people do it in a circle. they start on the out part of the yard and work their way in. I seen that done more out in the country where there is a lot of grass to be cut.

Beanie said the same thing about the circle. We have a TON of grass to cut. Big yard.
I'm doing half of the yard, he's going to do the other half- IF it doesn't rain tonight.

I normally go ounce around to get the edges and then go back and forth. If I'm feeling bored I'll go in a circle.

I love mowing the lawn but in a different sense of the word.
I mow around trees, hedges and anything else in the yard first, then mow along the outer edge of the yard toward the house. I mow in straight lines, turn, then mow back along that same line, overlapping the previous mow by about 6". This makes for a very nice line effect in the yard and it looks very clean. It's also easier to bag the mulch by comparison to mowing in circles which means theres mulch everywhere.

THANKS GUYS!
Wish me luck!
Duke, I think I'll take your advice and mow around obstacles, then do the whole "rowes" thing.
Since it's my first time (whoa...) I will attempt for straight lines, but I make no guarentees.

It's a lot easier to mow consistant, straight lines than it is consistatly shaped circles. The best thing you can do, is mark the front of your lawnmower with tape or something about 4" - 6" in from one wheel, then always line up that mark with the previously mowed wheel rut. You'll be amazed at how good your lawn looks when it's done, much like a soccer field.

that's exactly how gerry does it too. you just explained better then i did. you must be smarter then i am.
if you have a LOT of grass to cut, huge yard, then i hope you have a riding lawn mower because it'll take forever to do. We lived out in the country on farms with tons of yard. hubby was the only one out there pushing a mower. took him hours and hours to do. LOL!
loved watching him sweat out there though.

I always just mow so that the wheel is on the far side of the little rut from before i turned to go back, no need for tape.

It only deepens the wheelrut and if you should move out of the rut even slightly then you end up with an unmowed strip of lawn. Overlapping strokes is the way to do everything from mowing lawns to painting, it ensures nothing gets missed.
