local lingo

What words or phrases are local or foreign terms or spellings...like canadian words and stuff.

You must've been reading my mind DA. I was thinking about the same thing after reading the post from Duke about the 'loonies' and Meanon's post (copied above). SH also used the term Swamp Cabbage this week and few knew what she was referring to.

I use the words yonder, spicket and ofcourse y'all. Also, Meanon didn't know what the term 'go figure' meant. They must not use that one in the UK.

bugger, bloody for british, or british influenced countries would say.

I know in china (and probably russia too) when people referr to a friend they'll say comrade.

See...being southern....I would pronouce it more the other way! LOL!

DA...we'll have to keep our eye out for any other 'odd' lingo and keep these thread alive by posting them. It could get real interesting. Perhaps some people don't even realize the words they use which seem odd to someone else.

I live in a very spansih community so the lingo here is more like

MAMASITA= mommy or pretty girl

Poppy- a man

The BIg Man= The boss man

Denaro- $$$

The list could go on forevr

I remember when I first moved here.....I heard the sailors in bars talk about getting 'underway' and I thought it was a sexual term. It just mean the ship leaving.

Or using 'the head' ....instead of calling it a bathroom.
