The last honest man...........
Mr. Samuel Tarzea, a housekeeper in Abuja, has just joined this short list.
An employee of Perniel Apartments, an exclusive hotel situated on Adetokunbo Ademola Avenue in Wuse District of Abuja, Samuel, a Tiv from Benue State, made a sudden detour to greatness precisely on December 12, 2005 by returning a staggering N95 million ($700, 000 USD) to a visiting Ivorian General (name withheld) who had inadvertently handed the sum away in circumstances that could only be described as utterly careless.
I was reading this story and wondered.....if you found $700,000 that someone really had no claim to and it was soley up to you if you wanted to return it or not....would you?

I would return it. One time the bank accidently deposited $3,000 in my bank account, I promptly reported it, it took them a week but they eventually found the rightful owner, his account was one number off from mine.

Depending on the country, a finder's fee of 10% may apply.

I guess I am like BattleaxE. I would feel guilty if I kept it. I would have to be sure it was the rightful owner however.

"Ivorian General? Civil War. Corruption. Better to keep it"

In that case, maybe I would. If he is that bad I probably wouldn't feel guilty.

There are a lot of people in the world who have made their money as beneficiaries of dubious regimes. Or made their money profiting from civil war. I don't know this general, but as Ivory Coast is in civil war (for quite a while, I may add) I would not rule out the possibility. Often those regimes are dictatorships, but not always - South Africa has its share of well-to-do people who made their fortune under apartheid.
And because of the wealth they made at the time, can still afford to take legally sanctioned advantage of people (hiring people to work for them for the equivalent of US$ 7.00 a day).
That is our world ...

I do realize that and it is so sad. My kids are just about to start their own lives and hate to think of the world they are inheriting.
