No it's just not a southern states thing...BEST FOOD EVER. It's a ukrainian food, I think.

It is popular in the Ukraine, I'm Russian so I know of them as well.
Personally I'd much rather have some Prime Rib or a 12 oz. steak cooked Chicago with garlic mashed pototoes and sourdough bread. Some sauteed mushrooms would be killer too.

It is evening over here, and just had dinner. I think I would order potatoes with pears (a special brand of pears), made in a very specific way. I could eat hours from that, and live days on that without even growing hungry. YUM!
