got a speeding ticket
I got a speeding ticket for doing 90 in a 75 zone. this was at 12:30 am and i was like there are no cars on the road who cars if im speeding, but the cop obviously did and he hide just right so my radar detector didnt go off until too late and so i only slowed from about 96 to 90, but he let me off with only recording me as ten over the speed limit, probably cause i was like "yeah i have radar i know i was speeding and im sorry sir, its the middle of the night and i just want to make it home"

Re: got a speeding ticket
Well, lucky you. Radars are illegal here (as they are in most of Northern Europe). As for speeding in the dark, I really can't say I disagree with you, provided the traffic situation allows for it.

Re: got a speeding ticket
But rules are rules. If I steal something from a store and no one sees it, it is still stealing and illegal. What if a deer ran onto the road? At 90 you have less chance of slowing or avoiding it than at 75. The rules aren't just for others protection, they are for yours as well.

Re: got a speeding ticket
I don't know... it's a tricky one - speed, I mean. I respect the rules by the book, but when I am thinking of something else, I realise I am speeding and then I slow down again.
I would not speed on purpose, especially if there are no cars, because it's exactly then that accidents happen - people drive more racklesly because they think that there's less danger. I guess being involved in that accident really tought me a lesson.
My sin is a different one: when I am at the traffic light, I notice that the lights change sooo quickly so it's hard for me to slow down immediately, the moment I see red. I don't know if that's illegal, but I never on purposely speed up not to have to stop at red. I should pay much more attention at that.

Do they have Amber (yellow) lights in UK?
See, in the USA we have these yellow lights. They function to let drivers know the signal is about to change. Little known fact: It is illegal to go through a yellow light.

Re: got a speeding ticket
They change really quicky in the UK. And if I had to stop no matter what, I'd risk to have a car bumping into me.
But your point is great, I'll check my highway code on that one!
thx!

Re: got a speeding ticket
First off, I love how the speed limit is 75 (120kph).
Here it is only 100kph (60mph) and if you had been pulled over here for doing 96 (153kph) you're car would have been impounded on the spot for a week, your license would be suspended, you would have to go to court and you would have to pay an astronomically large fine on top of all the legal costs and towing costs.
Why? Because you were street racing. Yep, that's right - even if you were the only one on the road for miles around, and you were going that fast, you're screwed because you were "street racing".
Sometimes Ontario sucks.

Re: got a speeding ticket
I speed pretty hard whenever I am driving a car that doesn't have cruise control.

Re: got a speeding ticket
Lol.. the only ticket I've not actually gotten out of was a 110 MPH in a 35 speed limit zone.. and I -was- racing.. I gave the puppy dog eyes to the judge and promised never to do it again as it was my 'first offense' [yeah, right..] and he let me off with just a fine with no points on my liscence.. lol

Freak.. This would probably be the only case that the Dutch legal system would be more severe than the US legal system by default.
Count yourself lucky.

Re: got a speeding ticket
Well, I out ran the cop and at 17 he was very, very impressed with my driving skills so he wrote the ticket for 110 rather than the 130ish i was really doing... the difference being that 4x the speed limit is a felony and 3x is a midemeanor... or something like that.. *shrug*.. it's not even on my record.
But, most people here in Missouri get out of DWI [driving while intoxicated] very easily.. some people have 4 or 5 of them... Missouri has some of the most lax driving laws in the USA

They do but it works a bit differently. I think I prefer the US system, being a pedestrian or cyclist most of the time.

Re: got a speeding ticket
SPEED KILLS
speed + alcohol increases your chance of hitting and KILLING an INNOCENT PERSON
its more likely the person you hit will die while you suffer very minor injuries. so while you enjoy speeding around in your car, some poor family has to loose an innocent person they loved very much because of your reckless driving.
i will NEVER forgive the person who was not only over the drink limit but also speeding, who killed my best friend. the 300+ people that turned up for her funeral are the ones who have to live with her loss, not the idiot driver who killed her.
all he got was a stupid ticket and a small fine.
and to really rub it off, he won the lottery the next week.
