Those were NOT experiments. The experiments were carried out in Los Alamos, Arizona, if memory serves.

Interestingly enough, there have been 22 "almost" accidents since Chernobyl. Sometimes human error is the cause, sometimes ridiculous "cost efficiency" measures (read safety budget cuts).
