Those were NOT experiments. The experiments were carried out in Los Alamos, Arizona, if memory serves.

I'm sure a lot of people also wonder if we'll see a larger scale Chernobyl-type accident from this experiment.

Interestingly enough, there have been 22 "almost" accidents since Chernobyl. Sometimes human error is the cause, sometimes ridiculous "cost efficiency" measures (read safety budget cuts).

It's not so much the science that scares people it's more the fear that they cannot contain their experiments that can make it difficult to sleep at night.

You could argue the same thing about Genetically Modified Organisms; that is the wheat, the maize, the soy you consume.
