Dentists....
Why do we dislike them so much? Is it fear? Is it driven by the pain we are in?

It's the sound of that drill and that we are so helpless in that chair, OMG!
I have very sensitive teeth, so I ask him to give me a couple of needles, then he can root in the mouth all he wants, and tell me jokes at the same time! It's hard to laugh, though, when you're drooling...

I hate dentists as well because I've been butchered one time too many.

My mom's a dentist. She's really cool too. Most of her patients are friends of mine and of hers too.

My uncle was a dentist and he always had a gentle touch. My dad was a dental technician and made false teeth so I grew up around dentists in some fashion or other. I always enjoyed the picnics at this one dentist's house. He had a huge yard out in the boonies. When I had to change dentists, I knew them so it was easy to pick one that was good. I have had good luck so far but I do dislike going now that I have started to need crowns and such. No root canals yet but I am sure that is coming. And, yes, the drill is the worst. I am always afraid they didn't numb me enough and that they will hit a nerve.

I have porcelain plates over my front teeth. THAT was a pain when I had them done a few years ago because they had to file down all my other teeth so the adhesive would bond. It was the worst thing I ever went through. Good thing for dental insurance....it was a $5,600 job!

the reason I asked this is I'm a dental assistant and I'm starting back to school this week. I don't know if I want to be a dentist and be so hated lol
Merika you must have great dental insurance because most will not pay for that. Until recently most didnt pay for implants.

I had AEtna at the time...it was a great dental policy. The one reason I got by with it is because I had a front tooth which which cracked, almost a split up the middle. If the dentist had only fixed the one...the rest would've looked really bad. SO, she did two 'bridges' with 3 teeth on both sides. My out of pocket was around a $1000. (another tax refund shot to h*ll!)

That's a myth - at least in Europe it is. Dentists aren't hated, they are feared. Mom explains everything in great detail, before starting her work. If you get to make your patients trust you, then you're be very successful at your work.

I don't hate my dentist. Only had one in my entire life, for more than 90% of it. He does a good job, explains procedures real well. And the bills are not causing a heart-attack either . The advantages of relatively cheap health care.
Trust is essential, as twinkle said. And why should you NOT pursue a career in dentistry, BA?
