I used to do more church related work....now I do more political related work. I've never really done anything for a specific charity....other than a few bucks and clothes donations.
If I had lots of money, and one day I may, I would want to build homes for unwed mothers for don't have mom's like Star. A place where they can have their babies and live while they persue school or work goals till they can get on their feet. It would be nice to at least give them 6 months of refuge away from a judgmental world who won't help them.
I don't think a young poor girl, separated from the suppport of her family for any number of reasons, and is without a home loves her baby any less than someone who has financial means. I don't think it's fair to ask her to give up her baby just because she is not able to take care of it by herself. It's the least, as a society, that we should do.
Sorry....it's one of my major political soapboxes.

I routinely give blood- I donate to whatever whenever I have $- I try to give something to United Way and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation every yr.
I want to start volunteering at the Humane Society on Saturdays but it's hard when my BF and I share a car and he works most weekends....
If I were rich- I'd give it all away (OK most of it)

I am a monthly supporter to St. Judes Childrens hospital and Ronald McDonald house, I volenteer at RMH quite often with my son, we lived there for 6 months when he was ill and everybody helped us so much, I alos think it is comforting for the other parents there to know that me and my son both beat a horrible illness and it gives them hope.
You never know how hard people really have it untill you are suronded by them.
I think it is vital to teach your children to volenteer. I also help out at Noah's school as much as possible in the Special needs classes

I know after 9/11, while I was working for British Airways, the Red Cross was unbelievable! I have never been so impressed with the organizational level and willingness to go the extra mile they showed so many thousands of people.
We had people stuck in airports who weren't equipped for 'customs'...so the passengers couldn't get their bags....and the Red Cross came in like major Hero's and saved the day. The also rescued people who simply couldn't get home from here due to no plane seats available and had no money left for hotel or food. All we had to do is let the people know where the Red Cross was in their area....and they got immediate help. It was fabulous watching that sort of human kindness.
I was totally impressed.

I used to clean and vacuum the church, mow the lawns, etc., when the caretaker went away on holidays.
